Vuescan 8 bugs: Problems with 48bit raw scans with LS5000 and Minolta5400; clicking "abort" crashes

I'm having a great deal of difficulty doing 48bit raw scans with
either the Minolta5400 or Nikon LS5000. If anyone is able to do this
consistently with either instrument, please let me know.

First, with vuescan 8.0.10, 48bit raw scans will not run at all on the
Minolta 5400. Nothing. Dead. So I take it this isn't supported?

The situation on trying 48bit raw scans on the Nikon LS5000 seems much
more complex. I started out trying to do 48bit raw scans using the
"scan from profile" workflow, using vuescan 8.0.10. The raw file was
not written to disk, although jpg versions were.

Next, I unchecked "scan from preview" and tried again to output 48bit
raw files. This worked for a while, until I clicked on "abort" at the
bottom of the window. What a mistake!! Sometimes the program can be
restarted without very major problems by closing the program and
reopening, or deleting ini file, or by reinstalling the program. Other
times, nothing works. I keep getting the error message "The scanner is
not ready." Other versions of vuescan (8.0.4, 8.0.9) seem to have the
same problem.

On another topic, the new auto cropping in 8.0.10 doesn't work as well
as the old (say version 8.0.4) using mounted slides and batch scanning
on the LS5000, while it works much better with filmstrips.

My settings:
4000dpi
48bit
Media:Image
Filter: with or without medium dust
ICC profile: generated by vuescan
output: various, but mostly 48 bit raw, 48 bit tif, and jpg
with and without medium dust removal

My system: Windows XP

Thanks for any input.

Ed,

48 bit, Vuescan 8.0.10, and Minolta 5400 OK over here, so...

Three things come to mind straight off.

1. Use "Scan to File" under the input tab.

2. Are you using the std version of Vuescan? The pro version will get you
access to 48-bit.

3. Memory - a 48-bit rawscan of a 35 mm film will get you something like a
130 mb file, unless you make use of the compressing routine under "output".
Advise 512 mb memory to do this, pref. 1gb.

Take a look at Ed's manual on his home pages -prob best to read it through a
few times.

Good Luck. Mark

Thanks, Mark. I had been using Vuescan 8.0.8 when I first had the
problem with the Minolta 5400 and I hadn't used 8.0.10 with the 5400
until today. You're right-the Minolta 5400 works with 8.0.10 for 48bit
raw scans, but 8.0.8 and 8.0.9 do not work.

Also, I don't have the problem with the abort button on the 5400, as I
do with the LS5000.

Hi Ed, not sure how related this is, but:

I've found with 8.0.10, I am NOT able to batch process raw files,
outputting finished gamma tiffs. My aproach has been to rotate all the
raw files (with Photoshop) that have landscape oriented subject
matter. This frees me up from having to specify rotation in Vuescan.
Then when I scan-from-disk I use "maximum" for crop and "none" for
rotation, and everything comes out ok. Or, it used to, up to 8.0.10.

With 8.0.10, when doing scan-from-disk with a large "list" or "all", 3
or 4 images will be ok, then the next will be square, with the long
ends cropped (I'm scanning 35mm).

I've gone back to 8.0.08, and this behavior is gone. So it seems
something in the crop process has been changed, and it's currently
buggy.

I've email Ed Hamrick, about a week back. He emailed back to saying to
resend all the emails Aug 02, 2004 (today). I'm sure something will
shake out, I'll watch this thread and re-post if warranted.

Make sure you write the raw files with the same dpi setting
as the original raw files, or you'll have cropping problems.

You should also make sure you write the raw files with the
same number of bits per pixel as the original raw files.
