vuescan 8.1.11, epson 4870 IR not working

My saga of failure with this program continues. Version 8.1.9 as a
few others have commented apparently does not correctly align the
scanner in IR vs regular mode which results in the cleaning corrections
being misplaced (I previously thought this was an issue with higher
resolution scans, it just wasnt as apparent on the lowres scans).

I was hopeful when I saw version 8.1.11 which lists 'improved epson
4870 IR cleaning'. Yeah right. Now I have complete crap. If my tone
is poor its because of the hours I've wasted on this program.

So Mr. Hamrick if you are reading this then please look at these
two screen captures I've made this morning, one from 8.1.11 and the
other from 8.1.9 They show *just* the IR view and *just* the IR
data. The same options file was loaded for both versions.

You can see in 8.1.9 that just the dust is picked up, and that is
all that is displayed

You can see in 8.1.11 that:

not all the dust is picked up
it is displaying some part of the original image
it is picking up things that arent dirt (trees)

And as a result, not only are the ouptput images not 'cleaned' but
they are now blurred too.

Note also that I reinstalled 8.1.9 *after* making the capture from
8.1.11 and it functions just as it did previously - imprecise but
at least its trying to do the correct thing.


I've basically chalked this program up to $100 down the drain. Can
anybody recommend another program that will use the IR channel to
clean the image without going through the whole Digital ICE thing
and that works with the 4870?

Thanks for the heads up but I guess that tells you everything you
need to know. If I were taking $100 from people for somethign I
wrote I'd at least keep up with what people are saying about it.

Am I right in thinking that an earllier version of VS works to
satisfaction with your Epson 4870? Stay with it, try all newer
versions of VS in a separate directory (a different drive perhaps),
and switch to a newer version the moment it works OK.
That's what I do with my Minolta Scan Dual IV - found no workable
version up till now :))

I know a year or so ago , he left for a while

working properly with Minolta film scanners (though the 5400 model
users seem generally satisfied) and too many uncalled for personal
attacks, that he decided not to read this group any more. Too bad for
us, unhappy SD4/VS users!

He was here for a year and - as the current flood of messages shows -
the Minolta bugs have not been fixed. So whether he reads this group
or not has absolutely no effect on his fixing VueScan bugs - the bugs
persist.

Add to that all other bugs such as the LS-5000 streaking, the current
thread (see Subject), etc. There are daily reports of VueScan bugs,
some new, others constantly re-appearing.

Those are all objective facts, not personal attacks.

Unable to fix all these bugs he threw a temper tantrum like a 3-year
old and, allegedly, quit the group.

FWIW, Ed Hamrick seems to have solved most of the problems with the
Minolta 5400 in the current version, 8.1.12 - at least it works with

job with deep scratches.

FWIW, Ed Hamrick seems to have solved most of the problems with the
Minolta 5400 in the current version, 8.1.12 - at least it works with
mine. It is no longer necessary to run the Minolta software first, and

I still see the streaks with mine.
But, since 8.1.3 the obvious streaks in the shadows were gone; I
"only" have less visible streaks now, but not only in the shadows.
They seem like the film was scratched (it isn't, as I can see through
the microscope), but they only appear with Vuescan (also on 8.1.12).

I appreciate Hamrick's effort with this problem. I hope it will be
solved, one day or the other, with the other DSE5400 problem many of
us have experienced (poor dynamic range with loss of details in the
shadows).

Unfortunately that is right, IR cleaning with VS does make a
difference but isn't as good as ICE.

Have you, or has anybody else, tried to save in 64-bit (48-bit plus
16-bit IR channel) to subtract it later in PS, presumably with some
manual enhancements?

It worked quite well, but it took a lot of calculation time in
Photoshop. I made improvements to this action after I put it on for
download but I stopped working on it because I'm mostly dealing with
dust and minor scratches, and VueScan seems to deal with those effectively.

The earlier version did not work to satisfaction either - though
the problem appeared more of IR/visual scan allignments than
the current 'lets just correct anythign we like'. So in reality,
neither 'works'.

Is there an archive source that you know of? I just happened to
still have the install file for the older version. Perhaps if I
keep going back in time I'll find one that works.

I am not aware of any archive, but I'm sure that some here have older
versions handy. I myself have still some 20 versions "8" of VS
somewhere... :)) Not a complete set, though.

thanks Alex. Well I fired off an email to the author describing the
issue and pointing him to the IR screen caps I took. And I point blank
told him I'm not going thru hoops with his error reporting as I'm sick
of wasting my time being is unpaid beta tester. I'm sure for some people
it works just fine, but its been nothing short of a waste of money and
a lot of time for me. For what he asks the product should at least do the
basics in a reliable manner. If he wants to offer beta software to his
paid customers thats well and fine, just make sure their is a production
version too. Just MHO. I'll probably check back every few months for a
new version to see if it ever ends up working right, until then I guess
I'll just resign myself to using the Silverfast SE and digital ICE.

Just make sure to download the latest update to SE from the Silverfast site.
The version included with most 4870s didn't have ICE enabled yet.
