VueScan 8.0.10

E

Ed Hamrick

I'm going to release VueScan 8.0.10 in the next hour, and I'd
appreciate it if you'd report any problems with it in the
next 12 hours. I'm going on vacation for two weeks, starting
in about 18 hours, so the last chance for any minor fixes
is about 12 hours from now.

What's new in version 8.0.10

* Added support for HP OfficeJet scanners
* Added support for HP PSC scanners (Printer/Scanner/Copier)
* Improved white balance
* Improved automatic cropping
* Fixed problem with Scan Multi Pro and slide holder eject
* Updated list of supported scanners

I won't be able to read this newsgroup for the next few weeks,
and e-mail will be spotty at best (via my cell phone), so speak
now (in the next 12 hours) or forever (for the next two weeks)
hold your peace.

Regards,
Ed Hamrick

OK, that should have been an alarm, but I did install 8.0.10
and removed 8.0.9 installation file. I should not have done that,
because 8.0.10 does not want to recognize correct scanning mode
for my HP S20 any more. It always thinks it's in reflective media
mode regardless of how many time I switch to film/slide mode.
Now does anyone have 8.0.9 for windows which I could download?

For Ed: it would be nice to be able to download previous (proven
working) version from vuescan site directly. Also I would prefer if
naming of the installation file include complete version number,
like vuescan8.0.10.exe, not just vuesca80.exe.

Regards,
Andy.

I still have it around: what binary group shall I post it to?
alt.binaries.test seems to me a suitable one? Let me know.

Hi, thanks. It looks like my local NNTP server does not have
alt.binaries.test group. I can try to find some other NNTP server
which have it, but you could also send it to my email directly.
I even can put it on some web server and provide a link for
anybody interested.

Cheers,
Andy.

Hello,

*any* binaries test group would do: you name it, Giganews most
probably has it! What about alt.comp.periphs.scanners.vuescan?

E-mailing is not such a good idea...

Hi Alex,

Ok, I found a free NNTP server which has alt.binaries.test, so
I can get it from there. Also I don't see any problem with emailing
2MB file, unless one has a very limited outgoing traffic.

Cheers,
Andy.

Hello Andy,

the file is going to alt.binaries.test with the header: "for Andy".
E-mail is too open for misuse in NNTP environment to my taste !
Let me know here when and if you got it.

Hello Andy,

I had some slight difficulties in getting the installation file up,
but it is there now as "for Andy 3rd try" :)
Good luck!

Hi Alex,

only the last part (6/6) of the 3rd try appeared on my server (I'm
using news.phibee.net to get that newsgroup,) others seem to be lost.
Please don't spend amny more of your time fighting with that. If you
cannot sent it in email, maybe some else could.

Cheers,
ANdy.

Hello Andy,

Sorry to hear that your servers are so incomplete and have such short
retention. I can't complain: Giganews has it all complete and will
have it for at least 2 more weeks.

On the other hand: it is very little trouble to repost it several
times more: maybe you will be luckier with one of those!
I will post a 4th, 5th and 6th try :))

Thanks to Hans, I have now 8.0.9, and I can confirm that 8.0.10 has
a problem with S20. So, please, be careful if you have S20.

Cheers,
Andy.

I'm just back from my vacation and starting to try 8.0.10.

If anyone has figured out a way to scan negatives on the Nikon Super
Coolscan 4000, please say what you're doing?

I can't ever see two full frames, so I can't figure out both the offset from
the end of the filmstrip and the distance between the beginning of one frame
and the beginning of the next easily, and the numbers I use don't seem to
work (looking at the cursor and entering the Y-axis displacement that ought
to represent the distance, after a little subtraction). Nor can I find a
way to show two frames in the window so I can just measure the blank space,
except by setting the offset to something overlarge, which then seems to get
stuck. I've tossed the .ini file every four frames. (I've got four frames
per strip; VueScan is determined to find six, and starts giving me the blank
spaces as "images" instead of the exposures, after a while.)

I'm working around this one frame at a time by calling for a batch scan,
then stating only a single image number -- which seems to work.

No big deal, it's a hobby kind of thing, except I'm trying to document a
problem by emailing someone images.

In the meantime, is anyone getting strips of film scanned in batches,
even poor image quality, using NikonScan? I'll try that if it'd get
me through the week.

Oh -- Macintosh, OSX 10.3.4. 1024 mb RAM, 900 mhz G3.

I'm using it on the LS 5000 which I believe uses the same NilonScan
program as the 4000.

8.0.10 works fine on it with the exception of some Fuji films missing.
I can't ever see two full frames, so I can't figure out both the offset from
the end of the filmstrip and the distance between the beginning of one frame

I use "list" with [1 2 3 4] and it does 4 on the LS-5000.
I'm working around this one frame at a time by calling for a batch scan,
then stating only a single image number -- which seems to work.

No big deal, it's a hobby kind of thing, except I'm trying to document a
problem by emailing someone images.

I've done close to a 1000 images in the last week or so.
I did have a couple strips that worked the way you are describing, but
I had problems with them on Nikon Scan as well.
In the meantime, is anyone getting strips of film scanned in batches,
even poor image quality, using NikonScan? I'll try that if it'd get
me through the week.

NikonScan gives me good quality as well. It's just not as flexible
in some aspects AND it crashes my system about every 15 minutes.
VueScan has only crashed twice. I run a lot of apps along with the
scanner so the system does some page file swapping at times.

Athlon 2.8 Gig XP Plus, 1 gig RAM. and Win XP Pro.
