VSS Problem

Michael Q

I am experiencing problems with VSS while running NovaStor Backup software.
It has been suggested that the VSS is corupted and I have used
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/940032/en-us to fix the problem.
However I am getting an error message in RegSvr32 "LoadLibrary("vssui.dll")
failed - The specified module could not be found.

I have seen that there are downloads of this file when I have done a search
in Google. Can I download the file and if so will it cause problems?

The KB article you cite is for Windows Server 2003, not Windows XP. The
vssui.dll file does not exist on a Windows XP System.

In my search for help on this matter I have seen the comment that VSS can be
switched on or off. How do I do that?

You would do that by clicking Start, Run and entering SERVICES.MSC Locate
the Volume Shadow Copy Service, double click it, set it to Stopped and
Disabled. However, any applications or services that depend on VSS will no
longer function.
