VPN disconnects Remote Assistance

After establishing a remote assistance session from XP to Vista, I take
control of the vista computer and create a VPN connection on the Vista
machine. When I do this it disconnects my remote session and will not let me
back in until the Vista machine diconnects the VPN connection.

That is the split tunnel issue. See this page for an explanation. Note the
security issues involved with enabling a split tunnel, ie. clearing the
checkbox on the Vista VPN client.
