VPN behind router

Gentlemen:
I have a destop XP (pro) and laptop (XP home) both behind a Linksys BEFSX4
router. I set up the Server on the desk top and VPN client on the laptop, and
is able to use the laptop to behave like the desktop when I use the Remote
Desktop Connection provided by XP home whenever I enter 192.168.1.1 to the
VPN client, and get a good connection.

This whole set up also works without the router. Remote computer else where
can control my desktop successfully for real.

But with the router. big problem.
Now, I try to test the VPN client from behind the router as if it were
connecting from a remote location by entering a DDNS name or the external IP
address and just unable to get any connection, with error 800. Sometimes, it
gets to user name password verfication and then returns with another error
that server did not respond.

On the router set up page, I have tried:
disable the firewall,
disable block WAN request
open ports 47,50,500, 1723 on the desktop and forwad to 192.168.1.100 which
is what it show on the desktop using IPconfig command.

1. Is is possible to do what I am trying to do from behind the router?
2. what am I doing wrong or any suggestions?
3. Are there any ports I need to open on the client lap top ?
4. How can I verify the proper forward address?

appreciate any help as I have been trying for days!
