VPN behaviour

I have a VPN on my windows xp (latest updates) machine at home. It has
a connection to a clients office server (Samba on Ubuntu) I use for
access to my webmin utilities. All is working fine.. However whenever
my web browser times out loading a page it automatically tries to
connect to the VPN. This is incredibly annoying as almost all traffic
(tcpip traffic) slows to a halt. And unless I notice the icon blinking
at me for my attention I sit and frustratingly wait.

Is there a way to "Turnoff" this so called feature?

I understand this is the way a VPN is normally meant to behave. Often it
can be configured differently - keyword: Split Tunnelling. I believe
this can be done at the client, although that may require the consent
and co-operation of the VPN server.

Thanks for any advice....

Two things. One, be sure your VPN client is configured NOT to use the
default gateway on the remote network. And two, make sure the VPN
connection is not listed as a connection in your Internet Options
(Internet Explorer, Tools menu, Connections Tab).
