Vostro beeps from Mainboard

Andy

I have no speakers plugged into my dell vostro 200 (vista) desktop but the
onboard speaker beeps as in when an email comes in or if I click somewhere
on the desktop. I have muted the volume and the PC beep in the mixer panel
and set the sounds to 'no sounds' yet the blooming speaker on the main board
still beeps - what else can I do / try?

Thanks,

Andy.

You have way too much patience.

If you really JUST got this and having this much grief - do yourself a
favor and return it. DO not wait. Do not pass GO . Do not collect $200.
Just call them , get an RA number ( return authorization), box it up and
send it back.

With all of the problems you've reported, you're better to have them ship
another ' brand spanking new one' , than trying to fix a lemon. If you
wait too long that will not be an option. They will push back on you "
You never reported a problem sir so we cannot replace it ....." I've
known folks that have had that issue with Dell and stopped doing business
with them for just that reason - they were too nice and Dell pushed back.

I have friends looking to buy that model PC, so, if I may ask ...
Is this a NEW PC and beeping when you first got it amd turned it on ?
Or was Ok for a while then went bad ?
( just checking quality of shipped pc as I will probably be called when/if
it "doesn't work".)

It beeps when you click somewhere on the desktop ? If you look at device
manager - any problems ? I'm thinking if it beeps at ANY interaction
probably notifying you of error situation. On your Control Panel -
Sounds - speakers setting : set to ' no speaker ' ?

Hello. Yes with the speakers unplugged from the jack it says 'no speakers'
but I still get the beeps. Its the New Vostro 200 Desktop. It gives the beep
the same kind of way that when you have your soundcard installed (or onboard
sound there) but you have not put the drivers in for it you get them beeps
off the mainboard buzzer/speaker that's the way it acts - plug the speakers
in though and the beeps go away and the sound is ported to the plugged in
speakers as normal if all that makes sense.

A long time ago, when I was working, we had a batch of computers that
insisted on making sounds. Our IT dept gave everyone a 'speaker' plug to
insert in the 'speaker' socket. (Just a plug, no wire, speaker). Fooled the
system into thinking the systems had a speaker so the sounds went 'there'.

Good Idea, like a dummy plug I think I had one of these lying around
somewhere.

You said that you " plug the speakers in and the beeps go away " ?
My solution - plug in the speakers. ( Wise guy)
OR still makes the beep , but beep now comes from speakers ?

Also - issue since new ? or worked ok for a while until ... your posting ?

Good Idea why didn't I think about plugging in speakers! ;-)

Yep, its worked like that from new, I don't think its a fault its most
probably the built in jack sensing thing on the onboard sound it most
probably thinks that if no speakers are plugged in it better beep through
the onboard buzzer/speaker (though God knows why!)

re:

I don't think it is showing " No Speakers" because none are plugged in: it
is because that is also your 'selected choice'. I do not think it will "
autofind" speakers, so AFTER plugging in speakers go back to that screen
and select speaker config from drop-down . Rather than No Speakers,
usually you can choose Stereo, or Surround sound etc depending upon
card/speaker config.

What keyboard/mouse combination do you have? Standard USB stuff, or have
you added multi-media or wireless types?

The Vostro has no internal (windows driven) speaker (like Optiplex), so the
beeps you're hearing would seem to be from the mainboard speaker itself as
you've said.

This isn't a normal function, as typically those beeps are reserved for
errors, POST confirmation, or acknowledgement of BIOS resets.

I'd attempt to note any errors at boot (at or around the Dell splash screen)
or enter BIOS and view the DMI/event logs there to see if any errors might
be logged.

If mouse activity seems to be producing the beep(s), I'd also try swapping
the mouse temporarily with another.

Really, I think on this vostro the realtek onboard sound detects when you
plug into the jacks and what jacks you have plugged into (jack sensing) .

but I don't personally think it is faulty - the beep only happens when I
don't have any speakers plugged in and the fan noise is just the way its
designed if I get a replacement model it will just be the same.

If you don't have a BIOS setting, an old one of mine did, I can just unplug
the speaker from the MOBO. Then again, there is always the soldering iron
if it doesn't just plug in. My current setup has the PC speaker that came
attached to the case plug into the MOBO.

Mines soldered onto the mainboard.

On my computer, using the Realtek High Definition driver, the PC Beep volume
doesn't show on the Volume Mixer window, but is found here:

Right-click the Sound icon in the notification area, and choose Playback
Devices. Double-click Speakers, and on the Speakers Properties window,
choose the Levels tab. Under PC Beep, you can turn down the
volume or mute it.

You can test PC BEEP by opening Command Prompt. Hold down CTRL,
and then press G on your keyboard. Press Enter. Is that beep the same as
the sound you are hearing, for example, clicking somewhere on your desktop?

Too, in Device Manager, if View is set to show hidden devices, under
Non-Plug and Play Drivers, Beep can be Disabled. By default, it's Startup
Type is set to System.

Excellent I am going to try that I never even see that 'show hidden devices
before' thanks that's one more thing I have learnt. I will post back what
happens.

Thanks,

Andy.

Looks like the soldering iron or snips then. :)

ooh, I couldn't possibly do that ....... or could I ;-)

For the moment a bit of black insulating tape over the buzzers hole might
quieten it a bit.
