That would appear to be the answer to your question. Might consider trying
different microphones too. There are mics available with varying features -
background noise cancelling, those more suited for personal use - others
more suited for a meeting or lecture situation, etc.

PS: Some mics have volume wheels (good for boosting volume) and mute
buttons built in.

I went out and bought a new mic and the problem still exists.

Open Control Panel> Sound and Audio Devices.
Go to the Audio tab. You should see two buttons here: Volume and Advanced.
Under Volume are additional controls: Sliders to adjust the microphone
volume. And if your sound driver provides it, an Advanced button that leads
to a menu with "microphone boost."

had a similar problem with my desktop.Sound card is a soundblaster audigy 2
which i eventually discovered is speced for a different impedence mic than
standard pc mics (dont ask me why ) which is why input vol was so
low.Simplest solution was to opt for a usb mic which works perfectly.

Good suggestion. I have yet to try one of these. Even though USB has been
around for quite some time, I still have a hard time wrapping my mind
around the idea of a microphone that functions without being attached
directly to a sound card.
