volume icon

I am having winxp home edition. Sometimes the volume icon is absent from
the sys tray. The Sound and Audio Devices properties dialoge shows
volume icon in the task bar checked. I have inbuilt SoundMAX Integrated
Digital Audio [NoDB]. Reboot gets it back. Any solution to restore it
back without reboot please?
Thanks in advance for the guidance.

Right click the Start button and click Taskbar. Examine "Notification
Area".

Could be auto-hiding the volume icon. Right click on the taskbar, select "customize..." on the bottom, click on volume, and change to "always show"

I have not kept " hide inactive icon" checked. So I think this may not
be the problem. But I don't know.
