volume Icon

On a fresh install of XP pro sp/2, I'm missing the volume icon on
desktop display.

Attempting to activate it at Control Panel/Sound and Audio devices,
when I put a check mark into the box for `display on task bar' I get a
message from the OS telling me the volume package is not installed and
to use Remove/Install dialog to install it.

Looking closely thru the Windows extras and all the details available
there I see nothing about sound or volume.

Can anyone tell me what the `volume package' referred to in the
warning dialog is called or how to find it on the install cd?

Sounds like you did not install the hardware drivers for *at least* your
sound device.

You need to check the Device Manager and install the drivers for your
hardware before everything will be working properly. I recommend this order
to start with:

- Motherboard Chipset
- Network
- Video
- Sound

You get the hardware drivers from the individual hardware device(s)
manufacturer's web pages in most cases.
