Volume Control in Windows 98

Hi, Please can anyone help me, my friend has a secondhand Microsoft Windows
98 computer system, but there is NO SOUND coming from the speakers, there is
no speaker icon showing in the taskbar, and I have tried to locate the file
for him to check the settings in the Volume Control by searching for it, but
after the search it only found a small shortcut, and when this icon was
clicked on to open the (Volume Control dialog box) it did not open, nothing
happened, and it appears to have been deleted or hidden somehow. If he puts a
music CD in the drive, a message states there is no audio available. I
believe this computer system used to be an old office computer, but it is
now used only in the home by my friend to play computer games etc. he is new
to computing, and it is such a shame. Please can anyone help him?

Try a Windows 98 group? Anyhow, is there even a sound card? Some of the
older systems didn't even have any.
