Hi all, My volume control automaticly lowers. If I raise it up, it
reduces itself right in front of me. I updated my soundblaster audacity
z2 drivers and uninstalled winamp. I checked the volume on realplayer,
quicktime, WMP, etc... and they are all set to 100%.
Someone please help.
I have windows xp sp2 updated with all updates.

I have seen this happen with keyboards that include "hot keys" for
controlling volume. These keys sometimes override the settings you
attempt to make in software volume control. It's particularly insidious
if you have multiple users and fast user switching is turned on. The
keyboard volume control can be set in the inactive profile and will
still override the software volume control.

Does rebooting fix this situation, at least for a while?

Hi John!

I have EXACTLY the same problem with my new HP Pavilion dv8100 notebook.
It's happened several times, but nothing fixes it permanently. I've done a
complete rebuild of the drive twice, and System Recovery twice. I asked HP
for replacement recovery discs, since I think the OS is corrupt from the
factory (and hence, the home-made recovery discs they made me make myself).

If you learn anything more about this problem, let me know, and I shall do
likewise!

Many new notebooks allow you to use them to play Audio/DVDs
without the notebook fully powered on. You may want to check
on those features or possibly a piece of control software that may
be the cause of volume changes not being persistent. Most notebooks
ship with some kind of "Control" applet that provides direct access
to a Volume/Mute button on the notebook itself. I believe on HP's
the feature is called "QuickPlay".

I had exactly the same problem with my Compaq R3065 .. It is a hardware
problem.. I had to "disable" quick access buttons... now I can't use them
but at least I have sound... For you it will be easier since your laptop is
new and still in warranty. Go back to the shop and ask them to replace the
sound quick lunch buttons..

Uh, oh...

My volume control is again working, AND, copy & paste is back, too.

I think you're on to something here...

It might be just a stuck key, so I'll monitor it...I have 11 months to
decide to get it fixed if it happens again.

THANK YOU for the advice!

And tell them while they're at it, to replace that California sprout
stuff with a lean pastrami on rye, with mustard.
