Volume=-9640

I have performed the right click on the volume icon in the systray; left
click on open audio control, and moved the slider bar for midi synth all the
way up. And, I have reset the volume in the Outlook Express e-mail to
volume=0. That will work okay until the next time I start the computer, and
then I have to go through the same exercises. This problem only started
about 2months ago. If Microsoft is aware of the problem, why don't they fix
it?

My OS is Windows XP Pro SP2

I got the horse before the cart a bit. When I try to add sound to an e-mail
message in MS Outlook Express 6, there is no sound, and when I check I find
"Volume=-9640" I've tried all the above remedies -- none work. Why doesn't
Microsoft fix this problem?

Thanks for any and all help!

This is usually caused by an incoming message with a background midi with
the wrong volume settings. Get rid of the offending message and reset the
slider.

<Canned>

The volume setting ranges from -10000 to 0 with -10000 being off and 0 being
full volume.

Before you insert the background sound you need to make sure your volume
setting is correct. Double click the speaker icon by the clock. For a MIDI
file it will use the volume control labeled "SW Synth" or something similar.
It may vary depending on your sound card.

You can check your settings by clicking the Source Tab at the bottom of the
Compose Message window and looking for this tag <BGSOUND balance=0
src="filepath to soundfile"> and setting the volume to zero (0).

If not already there, View | Source Edit - Check it.

This is a sample of a bad setting:

<BGSOUND balance=0
src="cid:007a01c73858$60a87a00$6401a8c0@ARTSVAIO" volume=-9640>
