I guess the best is this one:

from what I hear.

No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware, demoware,
nagware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses
or warez please.
Just a reminder to everybody: because Andy Mabbett is stalking me in
this group, I have him killfiled.

By the way, although the beta wasn't adware or spyware, I don't know
about the current version. You should research this before using the
program.

There is Skype (which is not standards-based, so only works with Skype)
and there is the SIP standard. For SIP you can choose between several
software packages (commercial, freeware, open source) and hardware
solutions (looks like a "normal" phone but with an ethernet connection).

There is some info here: <http://www.pulver.com/fwd/>
Or search the internet for: SIP +VoIP

Thanks, I'll have a look. The laptop he has won't handle Skype; too slow
and not enough memory.

Here are some that you might want to try. IMO PicoPhone and DharmaPhone
are the best of the lot. They are really small and light on resources
and require no installation.

PicoPhone (57kb)

DharmaPhone (128kb)

Is this stuff really "near toll quality"?

I use DharmaPhone everyday and it's just like talking on the phone. I
have used it for years. On dial up and DSL. The people I talk to have
DSl and dial-up connections. Pico is just as clear. But like anything
else what works for me might not work for others.

No kidding. I tried this stuff a couple of years ago and it was crap. How
do you "do" the talk/listen as to hardware? Cheapie mics and earphones?

Speak Freely

" I said it would be worth the wait, and it was! The main change is a
major improvement in audio quality. See the Release Notes below for more
details.

conference call, without having to use multicasting!
* Enhanced Answering Machine - The answering machine now supports a pre-
recorded outgoing message so people will know when you are not available.

Never used anything special as far as hardware goes. Headsets, I
usually get Labtec, but will get whatever is at Staples for a fair
price. It's something like $19 for two speakers on the headset and $14
for one speaker on the headset. I usually go for the 2 speaker ones.
When I first started doing voice I used a lapel mic and walkman
headphones. I kept forgetting to unclip the mic from my shirt.

Soundcards, whatever came the computers I was using. All of which have
been onboard sound. My first computer was a 486 and Pico worked like a
charm on it. I only had to change one thing when I got a router. I have
the person I want to talk to call me first, which never works because of
the router. I then call them and all is good.

LOL Have a Plantronics that has caught on way too many door handles to
count.

Have Linksys router; will remember this. Bottom line is that it's "free"
and it works as well as a Bell telephone?

Earlier versions of Pico worked great, almost no delay. I find now that
there is a long delay (1 to 2 seconds) when using Pico. Pico is
extremely clear, better than I would get calling another country using
the phone. DharmaPhone has no delay 99% of the time for me and is very
clear.

Thanks for the info. I just threw my cell phone in the garbage.

Not.
