visualizations in powerpoint?

was wondering if it's possible to play 'windows media player'
visualizations+songs in powerpoint.

ultimately, what i'd like to do is have a title fade in then out over the
visualization, while it runs to a playlist.

Yes you can run a visualization in Media Player (insert it as a control).
NO you can NOT place anything on top of it. (Not allowed in PPT.)

i'm going to ask a stupid question now:

is that the same as inserting it as an object?

Actually, you can do it either way, as a control or as an object.

To insert the media control,
click View > Toolbars > Control Toolbox.
Then, click on the More Controls, scroll to the bottom and select Windows
Media Player.

Now, you will be able to insert the player at any of the slides.
To do so, you can either click on the slide, or click and drag to a
preferred size.
A properties screen should appear. If it doesn't, right click on the player,
select properties.
Under (Custom), click on the empty field which then displays a three dots
button. Click on the button to select file name or url.

thank you so much for your help. your instructions were perfect.

last question:
is there a way to change which visualization ends up playing with the song?
and if so, can you switch them up for different slides in the same slideshow?

thanks again,

If you intend to switch visualizations in between slides. You will need to
insert as object instead. Then, activate the content through custom animation.

i inserted the media player as an object, but when i selected the 'custom
animation' menu, all options were locked out (except for the 'slideshow'
button).

just to be clear, the visualizations that i refer to are what is displayed
in the media player as a song is played over. (the moving image that pulses
with the beat of the song...)

You need to insert the music (Insert > Object > Create From File), not media
player. Then, activate the content through Custom Animation (Add Effect >
Object Actions > Activate Contents). When activated in slide show, it will
bring up the windows media player.
