visual bars (sound, brightness) no longer display

I made a few changes to my system (removed a virus, updated my anti-virus
software) and everything works fine now, except the green bars that normally
display when I do the up/down buttons for sound or screen brightness no
longer display. The functions still work, but I can't see how high or low the
volume or brightness are. I've tried modifying my display settings, etc. but
no help. Any suggestions?

How about telling us more about how your green bars appeared
before. What brand and model of monitor? What software (if
used) to control monitor and do you have that software
driver for the monitor installed? If you are talking about
the ones on the monitor when you are actually using the
buttons on the monitor, probably not an XP problem and you
should be talking to your monitor manufacturer. If you are
talking about software that controls those features on the
monitor, the same will hold true.

I have an IBM T42p laptop. Normally I press Fn then the brightness up key
(Home key) or brightness down key (end key). For volume the keys do not use
the Fn key, they are just two standalone keys to the right of the Access IBM
button above my keyboard.
The adapter is ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 that came with the laptop. I
haven't made any hardware changes from when it was working to when it was not
working. Just updated some anti-virus software, etc. So it sounds like
somewhere along the way perhaps some monitor settings changed or something
more hardware related from what you mention. I looked through the settings
and can't tell anything that has changed, but I can work with the hardware
support next. Thanks for the help!
