Vista Troubles

E

Eswar Prakash

All,

I have been using Vista business on my laptop for a couple of months now.
For the past few days, out of the blue, I have started getting really
annoying little problems with it. Here are some samples:

1) I cannot use the Search box in Internet Explorer. It lists all search
providers and I could choose one. I could even enter the search text, but
when I press the Enter key or click on the "Search" button it does nothing

2) When I open "Find" in IE and click on the "Next" button, I get an
Automation server error.

3) When I open Windows Explorer and double click on a folder it opens in
a new Window although in the Folder options for the computer, the drive and
the folder that I am double clicking on has that set to open in same window.

4) In IE the "Menu Bar", "Work Offline", "Full Screen" menu items are
always greyed out. When I right click on a link and click "Open in New Tab",
or "Open in New Window" nothing happens.

5) Clicking on a link that opens a new window stays blank and a "App
Busy" cursor is displayed over it.

I am not sure what more is broken inside, yet I don't remember
installing / uninstalling anything that would break Windows. I have a
feeling that all these problems are linked to one solution, but I have not
had luck finding a solution for it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,
Eswar

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Security.
Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode" and click on
"Reset all zones to default level" and click Apply.
Go back and place a check next to "Enable Protected Mode"
and click OK, then re-launch Internet Explorer.

Thank you for the quick reply, but unfortunately, all the IE problems still
remain.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

This procedure will scan Vista's protected system files
and attempt to repair or replace missing or corrupt files.

If you have any 3rd party toolbars installed, now would be a good time to
remove them. Run spyware scans with Spybot or whatever you have, but do it
in Safe Mode. When you think that the machine is clean, try doing a Vista
System Restore to a date prior to your troubles..

As a troubleshooting step try running Internet Explorer with no add-ons.

All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No add-ons)

or

In the Start search box type:

iexplore -extoff

Thanks. I tried all of your suggestions. But to no avail. When I do a "Run
as Administrator" on IE, I seem to get a proper working IE, but not as a
standard user.

Oh the fun of running MickeyMouse's Fista. :) Do you guys ever do anything
productive with your boxes or do you spend all this wasted time just trying
to keep the toy operating system running?

Cheers.

Do you use Linux? Everytime you "google", you're using Linux.

Does Ubuntu 7.10 fix the problems with PS/2 mice not working, which 7.04 is
plagued with?

Me personally? No, I don't spend time trying to keep mine running. It just
runs. Sorry to disappoint you.. :)

Some of my local clients have issues, but much the same as they did with XP
et al. The usual stuff, downloading files until the C drive is full to
capacity, running scans offered by anti-spyware stuff that is itself
spyware, downloading funstuff that is anything but fun to remove.

Fair-weather Linux users don't have these problems, but then again, they
only seem to get kicks by coming into Windows newsgroups and sneering.
Fair-weather Linux users also seem to be blissfully aware that much of the
crap is generated on Linux machines, and that Linux machines can themselves
be carriers of spyware.

The worst of it all is that people like me are not unduly affected by 'n'er
do well' Linux users. It is the pensioner who just wants to get e-mail and
play online Bingo or the kid who wants animated smiley faces for their
chosen messenger who suffer. The same 'productive' Linux users are not
averse to going into chat rooms and heisting Yahoo accounts, and admitting
openly to doing so.

Of course, the majority of Linux users are ok. As always, it is but a small
minority of users who seek to undermine in any way that they can.
Productive? Yes, but not in a way that benefits anything or anybody beyond
their own distorted sense of fair play.

I defend the right of the pensioner or kid to be able to go onto the
Internet safely. They should be able to do so using Windows, Linux or MacOS.
Nobody has the right to tell them what they should use. They have the right
of free personal choice. What is your opinion on the rights of the people
above?

I Have No Idea What Problems You Are Talking About In Open Source Linux
Ubuntu 7.04 RTW, Because I Own Mostly USB Keyboards And USB Optical Mouse's,
Which Is What Most Newer Computers Are Coming With, Just FYI.
