Vista to XP Pro

Boria Condrey

We just bought new computers for the business and they came with Vista
Ultimate. Is it possible to go back to XP Pro. After getting the new
equipment we a finding out that our software won't run on Vista so basically
the computers are useless unless we can revert back to XP Pro.

Everything is new right now so if we have to wipe out the hard drive I don't
think it will be a problem.

The new machine's hardware could be a problem. Make sure that there are
XP drivers for the new hardware. Microsoft and the hardware folks are in
cahoots to make sure you don't "down grade" to XP. If there aren't any
drivers, I would take the machines back and insist on machines with XP Pro.

I went back to XP after a few months because some of my 3D and CAD software
just works faster with it.

If you are just talking about normal office type applications, it would be
less hassle for you to investigate whether you can get them running on
Vista, rather than installing XP and then having to find XP drivers for your
new hardware.

What apps are not working with Vista?

On the Bridge!

contact the company you got them from and ask if you are entitled to
downgrade rights to xp and if they have drivers for your computers for xp

with downgrade rights you get a free copy of xp pro to install on those
machines

You should try to install older software using Vista's
Program Compatibility Wizard:

First off let me say that I like Vista from what I have seen so far.

My software is up to date. My problem is Dongles. I have software with
HASP dongles and they are not compatible with Vista. These are specialized
softwares for custom cabinets shops. Enroute from scanvec amiable is one
and Cabnetware from planit solutions is the other. My business does not run
without these two softwares. The software seems to load fine but the dongle
drivers are incompatible. The dongles manufactorers are telling me that it
will be a couple of years before they are compatible with vista, which is
absolutely stupid. Vista has been out over a year I believe. I have never
had any major problems upgrading to newer operating systems until now. I
honestly don't know what else to do but down grade to XP or stop running my
business(and that ain't gon happen)

I will try the compatibility wizard but I don't think it is going to help
unless it will allow the dongles to operate in xp mode.

Thanks,

Reports are that Microsoft is dropping distribution of XP in June of this
year. One would assume that when they stop selling XP, ongoing support for
XP can't be that far behind. Seems to me that relying on XP at this point
in time is a deadend.

Cheers.

Ah, this is exactly the same problem I had with my ArchiCAD dongle, but
WIBU-KEY sorted out Vista drivers by the time Vista RC2 came out.

Yes, in that case you will need to move back to XP.

If you list all components of your hardware here, I'll tell you if it is
possible. I need motherboard and graphics card, essentially.

Microsoft has extended support until the end of the year and who knows
if they will extend it again, what with the miserable excuse for an OS
that Vista is. That said, this is a good reason to start learning Linux :)

Thanks,
You might consider dual booting. That way you won't lose touch with
Vista yet still be able to use XP when needed.

Hey, believe it or not the compatibility wizard worked on Enroute. THANK
YOU, THANK YOU , THANKYOU. Saved me a lot of grief. Cross your fingers and
lets hope works on Cabnetware.

One thing though. When I open the program, windows says its unidentified
program and ask if I want to allow this program to run. Is there anyway of
stopping this message on this particular program. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again.

I Feel the same way and have heard that XP was being dropped in June. That
is why we went with Vista. Eventually XP is going to fade away anyway. May
as well go with the newest thing out there. I just never have had the
problems with upgrading that I am having with Vista.
It should all work out I hope.

Thanks,

Wrong poster to reply to, but did the Compatibility Wizard work with
EnRoute? It made the dongle driver work??

Selectively disable UAC for your trusted Vista applications

Um, the "newest thing out there" can be found here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

In fact, there's a new version coming out next month.

It must be really neat.

I wouldn't know and I didn't say one way or the other. I would suggest
contacting the makers of the dongles to find out.

Actually, a dirty trick. You pay for Vista as part of the machine. You
then go out and buy a new copy of XP. Double hit, double profit for 1/2 the
support.

Will work until people get ticked off enough.

If you are thinking of Linux, most computer stores now have a bone PC area.
Where the Vista machines have been returned. Great prices, usually knocked
down quite a bit but make excellent Linux choices.

I don't think the link you sent me is what I am after. Could be but doesn't
seem like it.

When I click on the Icon to open enroute, window tells me its unidentified
and wants to know if I will allow it to open. I would like to get rid of
this message when I click on enroute icon. Task Schedular seems to be
performing a specific task when I boot up.

I may just be misunderstanding

thanks

actually there wouldn't be a dirty trick if people knew to buy a blank PC,
some recommend basic Dell, first and then buy what ever OS you want and
load. save a couple steps (time) and spend about the same amount of money.

You mean like the old fashioned way? Where you the consumer get to choose?

Wonderful idea.
