Vista start menu help

Forgive me if I've looked right over the answer here... always the easy ones
that stump us.

I recently purchased a Gateway laptop and the Start Menu is annoying me.
Every time I boot up the computer, it's disposed of the programs I actually
use and defaulted to all those pack-ins I'll never ever use, like AOL or
Windows Calender.

So how do I set the Start Menu to show me the programs I most often use, as
with older versions of Windows? I realize somebody's gotta make some money,
but this is really a gigantic step backwards.

Wrong info to them! They want recently used programs to show up, NOT
everything to start at startup!
Get it right; or DON'T post!

Just Right-click on the ones you don't want listed, and select "Remove from
list".
The top portion is the Pinned area, for the ones you want to see all the
time. The area below the horizontal line is the recently used programs. As
you use new programs, they will show up here.

Gee Mick, that's kind of strong. It would have been nice if you had
followed up your comment with a post to the OP responding to his question.

Yeah, that's the thing. When I restart the computer, it defaults to all the
pre-programmed icons that were there to start with. No matter what I remove,
use during that session, etc. The menu will remove it, or remember programs
that I've used WHILE THE COMPUTER REMAINS ON... but when I start it up it's
back to the same list of programs that it had on the start menu the day I
bought the thing.

So I'm assuming I have some magical spam version of Vista if people don't
seem familiar with this problem.

Thanks for the responses, guys, I really appreciate it.

I've followed the instructions, but I won't know if it works until later. I
use this computer as my store's register, so I can't really turn it off until
closing time.

The operation was a success. Thank you.

If anybody else is having a similar problem, be patient. For some reason it
didn't kick in until the second time I rebooted.

Which piece of advice did you follow? I followed the postings and it looks
like 3 dif links were listed. I just got a new laptop, the problem you've had
is driving me batty.
