VISTA SP1 bombs out...

H

Harry Krause

Downloaded the "official" trial release this AM from the MS site.

Invoked program, got a progress bar that went about halfway across the
progress bar box. Then I got a message that the upgrade suffered a fatal
error. Box came up, directing me to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=1001139.

That took me to a general MS error page, but absolutely no useful
information.

Here's the error screen:

Suggestions?

Tried it again from the beginning, same error.

Thanks1

Whoops...that's 101139, not 1001139. No info there, either.

Its probally because everyone is trying to download it as well.

I downloaded it.
561 KB.

Or are you saying that once I start the install on it, it has to
communicate with MS while it is installing?

If that's what he should have done, then that's what Microsoft
should have instructed him to do. Instead, most download a
small file that tells Vista update to check for SP1. Then they
have to download 2 more files and get current on other priority
updates *before* SP1 will show up in Updates.

Exactly the same problem here, I downloaded the
Windows6.0-KB936330-wave0-X64.exe file, ran it and after a few mins it
bombed out with the same error you got, pointing to a link that doesn't
exist.

Nice to see MS is carrying on with the same tradition of product quality in
SP1 as in the original Vista ;-)

You are correct Michael -
Since I have the Ultimate Edition of Vista, I had to get 3 files before the
SP1 update showed up. The 1st two took 2 tries to install and the 3rd
installed on the 1st try. It mentions in the instructions to go slowly and
allow all the updates to complete their "tasks" before going on to the next
step. Not my strong point for sure:)
I did all this at midnight last night, so I am guessing it wasn't as busy as
it is today. So far all is working fine.

Well, I am sorry for your trouble, but I'm glad I'm not alone in this!

Although it doesn't say so on the MS site, or the full SP1 install file
doesn't tell you, I'm assuming it needs KB938371 & KB937287 to be installed
before the full Windows6.0-KB936330-wave0-X64.exe is installed.

Unfortunately, of course, there's no links to download KB938371 or KB937287

Peter, try this link - I used it and got SP1 installed - read all the
instructions first and proceed slowly:)
I hope it will work for your application.

I followed the instructions precisely, and in order, and SP1 did not
download and install via windows downloads. The update applet ran for a
long time and then it timed itself out.

When I downloaded the entire SP1 file separately after running the
initial applets, it bombed out when the progress bar was halfway across
its box.

Next?

Harry,

I can only report what worked for me last night. I have read a few SP1
articles in the last 12 hours or so and it seems the 64 bit version is having
more problems than the 32 bit. Also, if you had an earlier beta version on
your machine it seems to mess things up. Sorry you can't get it installed. My
guess, and that is all it is, is the site is overloaded to the max with
people trying to get SP1.

Very strange. Worked fine here, I downloaded the full .EXE file. No errors
whatsoever

Did you check on Dell downloads site... maybe you need an updated driver or
such.
