Vista Shuts down when I plug in certain USB devices.

Does anyone have any idea why my Vista Home Premium shuts down when I plug in
certain USB devices? First, I thought it was something with my iPod, but I've
tried it on other computers and it works fine. Then I plugged in my digital
camera and it does the same thing. My keyboard is USB and it works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This update used to be called "Reliability update for the USB stack in Windows Vista"
I have no idea why the name was changed. But this part of the update may help you:

<quote>
Error message 2:
STOP 0x1000007E usbhub.sys SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
This error occurs because of a race condition in the Usbhub.sys driver. This condition occurs
if a USB device driver tries to enter a selective suspend state when a previously canceled
selective suspend request has not yet been fully processed.

Thanks for the input, but everything worked great before I installed Vista.
It's software not hardware.

Thanks for the info, but it still doesn't work.
I installed the update, rebooted, and plugged my
camera in and it just restarted on it's own.
If I leave it plugged in, it keeps restarting.
When it restarts a second time it comes up with
a blue screen with some error codes
but they disappear so quick I can't write them down.

Did you install any software related to your
camera?

Then do this:

Type "System" into Start Menu's search, click it.

To the left you'll see "Advanced system settings", click it.

System Properties will open up at the "Advanced"
tab. You'll see "Startup and Recovery" at the bottom, click
the Settings.

Look for "System failure" and uncheck "Automatically restart"

Now, when your computer crashes/restarts, you'll be able to
read the error message. Report back here and try a google search, too.

A race condition? Now that's an interesting message.

Hi,

Please locate the files in c:\windows\minidump - you will need them to
analyze the faulting driver.

Cheers

To prevent it from restarting (so you can see error message)

click start globe
right click computer
properties
advanced system settings in left pane
advanced tab
startup and recovery section - settings
in system failure area uncheck 'Automatically restart'

OK, error says
NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
STOP: 0x00000035
Searched on google, everyone seems to point to a driver being the problem.
But, I'm not sure which one, or how to find out.

Hmm, references I see suggest a buggy mouse driver (odd). What kind of
mouse or other pointing devices do you have installed?

Also see a reference to Daemon Tools.

I'm not sure about the brand name, I've had it for a couple of years, but
it's just a 5 button optical mouse(USB) and a Belkin USB keyboard, that's all.

There are a host of different USB related issues with Vista at the moment.
Try downloading and installing windbg from microsoft. Run it as
administrator. Load the minidump file that should have been created in
c:\windows\minidump.

Use the commands as follows:

..symfix
..reload
!analyze -v

This should tell us what driver is causing the issue.

Thank you, very much........
It was HighPoint Raid Controller Driver, I was able to find an updated
version, installed it and everything works great now.
Thanks Joe and everyone else who helped.
