Vista Search Index broken

Hi,

Search index is not working as expected. Specifically in Outlook 2007 it
fails to find contacts which are clearly present. I have tried stopping the
service completely and restarting it. I have tried rebuilding it using the
rebuild command in the advanced tab of the Indexing Options.

The rebuild got to 280,000 and then restarted from scratch on its own.

I have chosen to search most of my PC as a restricted indesx is useless to
me.

I have also chosen to change the index location to a different partition
with loads of space in the Advanced Options dialogue. But this doesn't seem
to have worked properly although it's difficult to tell what is going on.
The current location remains "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft" and the New
location, after service restarted is "D:\Microsoft Search Files" - despite
restarting the PC these entries remain unchanged.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Nigel

That is a huge amount of items to have in the index. You should restrict
the indexer to only index the user folders and any mail items. You
shouldn't let it lose on Program Files, Windows and other system
directories.

Hi Paul,

I see you are not far away - I'm in Taunton.

As I mentioned this is only indexing part of my system not including the
files you mentioned. I believe I am ccorrect in thinking the Vista search is
based on MSSQL server lite (feel free to correct me if I am wrong). If that
is the case then 280,000 is not such a huge number. Plus Copernic desktop
search is able to cope with my whole system which is the way I prefer to work
because there are always the odd couple of programmes that are determined to
store data where they choose and not where you want it. I guess I am heding
towards a compromise of having both installed restricting Vista Index to
allow quick hits and then sing Copernic if that doesn't come up with what I
want.

If the number of records is aknown limitation why doesn't Microsoft clearly
identify it as an issue i.e. a dialog letting you know what the limit is if
it is reached.

Thanks for looking at my problem

Nigel
