Frequent lockups that nothing will fix except a cold reboot.

The list goes on....

HELP ME!!!!

Rangebooster N loses internet connection every couple of days.

I used the Microsoft upgrade advisor and it told Me all the programs
that wouldn't work.It also told Me that I would have to upgrade My HP
scanner.Other than that it said I would be fine running the Vista OS.You
know I would be pretty stupid to spend all that money when XP or better
yet Ubuntu Linux works fine with the hardware I have in place now.
So run the advisor. You will have to install the .net framework but it
uninstalls easily when You are finished.

You have my sympathy. I too have purchased Vista - a foolish move for
which I am in deep regret. So far as your problems go - First up Audigy.
Try installing the XP drivers (there really is little difference between XP
and Vista when you remove the gloss) in compatibility mode (its under
programs on the Vista style Control Panel menu). The USB drivers should be
on your motherboard chipset driver disk (check on the manufacturer's website)

You will also need the latest mouse drivers from Logitech - I use a L
keyboard and mouse and they are amongst the few things that HAVE worked,
although the Vista drivers should give basic control if connected to PS2.

Total cost of ownership, eh?

Creative drivers are in beta. Either they work, work with reduced
functionality (that's my situation, no surround sound), or they won't work.
You'll have to wait for Creative to get the drivers squared away.

Did you check for driver for the scanner on the Epson site. Some legacy
printer/scanner hardware is not being supported by the manufacturers in
Vistsa.
Logitech Mouse has lost its functionality...no more double click with
middle
button.

That functionality came from the Logitech driver. Check on their site for a
Vista one. For some hardware they might not provide it.

Then upgrade the software. Not all XP software works in Vista.

You didn't say what the computer is, or how you did the install, if an
upgrade or custom install. I would suggest, if you did an upgrade, that you
use Windows Easy Transfer (WET) on it to copy data and settings, then do a
clean install. Check for Vista drivers for all hardware. After installing
use WET to bring back in the data and settings. Then clean install all apps
from original media.

The best suggestion I can offer is: NEVER buy any OS from MS until at
least SP1 - preferably SP2. This is the same lesson I learned from DEC 20
some odd years ago. What they send out initially is essentially a beta
test version.

sounds like you need to do a little work yourself in checking for updated drivers for your hardware.

it is impossible for MS to provide drivers for EVERY piece of hardware in the world.

I just spent the am putting XP Pro back on...not a hitch..everything working
perfectly. Vista will be sittin on my shelf for a nice while I suspect . I
forgot to mention hardware details in my first post... I installed vista home
premium 32 bit upgrade version. I am running p4 3.2 Ghz, Asus p4c800e deluxe
board, 2 G of ram, dreaded audigy 2 platinum as I mentioned, and a bfg agp
512 mb card for video. I know this is not the latest or greatest hardware but
My God, if this isn't enough to run vista then so be it......I did run that
foolish advisor before I did the vista upgrade and it told me the scanner
would not work so I thought no problem.... In the past week I have scoured
the web for updated drivers for all my components, but most manufacturers
seem to be only supported their most recent hardware, and many only have beta
versions of those. AND anytime I tried to install xp drivers instead of
(ABSENT ) vista drivers, vista would not allow me to do the install.
HASTA LA VISTA as they say...I will stick with XP... CY

Some general tips when installing the sound driver:

If you are using the Audigy 2 as your only audio source, you might as well
disable onboard audio from your motherboard in BIOS.

Right-click the driver .exe, go to Properties and Unblock the file. Then
install the driver.

Make sure your correct sound device is selected (Control Panel>Sounds).

Make the correct adjustments to your speaker settings within the Creative
Audio Console on the start menu.

For your other stuff, try checking Windows Update for drivers or Problem
Reports and Solutions for any compatibility notices about your hardware (all
in Control Panel).

Also, try this. Go to Hardware and Sounds in Control Panel, Click Manage
Audio Devices. Click on each of the items that control your "Speakers" and
click the "Properties" button at the bottom. Under "Advanced" uncheck the
boxes under exclusive mode. Now go back in to the "Speakers" control that
lists your sound card. Click "Properties". Click "Advanced". Now recheck the
boxes under "Exclusive Mode". Now hit the "test" button. Your sound should
now work.

This worked for me in dealing with this problem.

Hope this helps.

I've had no problems with USB flash drives or SD card readers in
Vista. I have noted "unknown device" when certain USB sockets used,
in both XP and Vista, where those sockets were found to be mis-wired.

From front to rear, think "Italian Flag":
- red
- white
- green
- black
- (single unused pin = "back")

Suspect this if some (typically front-panel) USB sockets don't work.

That sounds hardware-ish.

New OSs are best served on new hardware. If you insist on installing
a new OS on old hardware, especially if via an "OS upgrade", then all
bets are off. I know various folks claim this "works", and much of
the time it does, but when it does not, I don't see that as a true
reflection of the new OS itself. Welcome to Caveatland :-/

Hmm.... 'kay ;-)

Problems I've had have usually been sware (software... I see some
readers think I mean "spyware" when I use sware) that isn't yet Vista
ready. I was puzzled by the pattern of this; so many affected apps,
and so many from large vendors who really should have been ready.

I suspected a recent change in Vista, near the end of the beta phase,
that broke vendor readiness. This would paradoxically hit the most
thourough vendors with the deepest and longest efforts ar Vista
readiness, and that matches the pattern I see.

I've had one unsolicited confirmation from Pastel Accounting, so far.

So yes; the pain has been:
- no working Nero bundleware with even newsest optical drive stock
- no working bundled faxware with modems
- still no built-in fax/voice answering software present within OS
- Pastel, QuickBooks, HP printer drivers etc. "not ready"

These problems will get less, whereas XP's problems will grow, over
the years that follow. So, with an "old" PC midway through its 3-5
year life, keep it in XP. For a new PC starting its 3-5 year life,
I'd swallow the temporary pain and go Vista, not XP.

BTW: There's a known issue with Skype that may appear to be a
system-wide microphone problem.

Specifically, Skype 3.0x introduces a new Automatic Gain Control (AGC)
feature that automatically adjusts microphone levels. This fails in
Vista by inappropriately lowering the microphone level to zero, and as
Skype starts with Windows and runs all the time, this may present as a
system-wide failure of microphone input.

Skype 3.1x beta is said to fix this, but it's beta. Instead, one can
edit a pair of Skype's XML files to disable the AGC "feature".

Unfortunately, it is hard to do this pre-delivery, because the
relevant XML files are not createsd until the user creates a Skype
account. So it has to be done post-delivery, in the field, unless the
system builder creates the user's Skype account before delivery.
