Vista Premium to Ultimate upgrade

I have bought the upgrade and the anytime upgrade disc. I am having problems
with the upgrade. I have tried twice to do it, the second time was after
speaking to microsoft direct services helpdesk. I was walked through the
first part of the installation, inserting the disc and to the gathering
information stage. I told support I would contact them if it failed again
The installation seemed to go ok right through to the last stage where I got
a message - "could not configure one or more windows components" My computer
then rolled back to vista premium. I will phone support again on Monday but
mean time anyone have any ideas please

Disable/Preferably uninstall Anti-virus, and disconnect ALL peripherals
except Monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Add other hardware later.

Hi Rory thank you very much - I will try that on Monday when I have a free day.
I will probably disconnect the periherals as well as suggested by Mick
earlier - sort of belt and braces - I will post and let you know how I get on

Before I try the suggestions a further problem has arisen which I found when
I restarted my computer – (I am trying to upgrade premium to ultimate as
above)
After the last roll back to premium my computer dosnt start properly
It runs thro normal sequence but before the Microsoft icon appears a message
appears saying upgrade unsuccessful and it goes back to the beginning of
start up. I get a black screen with two options one says “windows setup†the
other is “Windows vista†if I am very quick I can select “windows vistaâ€
option and the start up is normal into vista premium
I tried a system restore but it made no difference – perhaps I need to go
back further? – Is there a simple solution please
I will post this as a new query as well as here
Thanks Alan

You did not provide any hardware/software specs, so I'll ask:

1. Is this an upgrade from OEM?
It does not sound like it, but just because you bought the upgrade
license, doesn't mean you qualified for it.
You stated you additionally bought an upgrade disk which means your
original disc was either an OEM partition and you didn't have one, or it did
not have the Anytime Upgrade logo on it. If it was an OEM partition, you may
be in trouble.

2. Assuming you have the right stuff...
Do you have more than one hard drive?
If so, unplug the second drive. This upgrade gets confused and puts the
bootmgr files on the second drive making it nearly impossible to boot
without the DVD.

Do you have a Creative sound card?
You'll need to load the driver during the installation and not at the
end.
It's easier to remove the card and put it in later.

Is Home Premium activated?
WAU won't finish installing if the version you are upgrading is not
activated.

Do you have a video card with SLI enabled?
Go into the BIOS and disable it.

Remove any USB devices.

While this is seldom the case, make sure your BIOS is up-to-date.

3. When you start the installation, do not select the option to update
during installation.

4. When you're all done, your desired applications are installed and windows
and drivers are up-to-date...
Make a full backup. Then, when you need to re-install Windows "clean"
you won't have to go through this multiple installation madness.
Just restore your backup.
