Vista Offline files not working

J

Jax

First of all, I apologize if I don't use the correct terms, but my Vista
is in italian; also, phone support won't help me because my Vista is OEM.
I have a big problem with offline files: at first all seemed to work, I
activated it and started to select the files to keep them available in
offline mode. Vista showed they were "available" and as long as I stayed
connected all worked, but when I disconnected I couldn't access the
directories where the files were.
After a few tries and reboots, now the service CscService don't start
automatically, and won't start even manually; here's the output of sc
query cscservice:

NOME_SERVIZIO: cscservice
TIPO : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATO : 1 STOPPED
CODICE_USCITA_WIN32 : -2147024893 (0x80070003)
CODICE_USCITA_SERVIZIO : 0 (0x0)
PUNTO_CONTROLLO : 0x0
SUGGERIMENTO_ATTESA : 0x0

(I think it's useless to translate it).

Please help... I'm really stuck, and I don't want to go back to XP for
this...

Bongiorno Jax,

I don't know the exact cause of the problem, but here's a couple of ideas
....

Error 0x80070003 is a standard Windows error meaning ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND,
"The system cannot find the path specified"

So, the CSC Service is not starting because it cannot find some directory
which it needs in order to run. The most critical directory for Off-line
Files is %windir%\CSC - if this directory was missing, it could cause the
error you are seeing.

If C:\Windows\CSC has disappeared from your machine for some reason, I'm not
sure of the best way to get it back ...maybe restore from a system backup,
if you have one; or jump back to a restore point before the error first
appeared?

Other folks may have additional ideas for you - I hope this helps a bit,
anyway....

A piu tarde,

Thanks, at least now I have a clue... unfortunately (!) the directory is
still at his place, so is c:\windows\system32\cscsvc.dll, I had already
checked it, following this thread:
http://groups.google.it/group/micro...0003+cscservice&rnum=1&hl=it#66efbaa37871917c

Anyway, it's strange, because I can't get the Offline Files work in both
of the two Vista (in the other the service works but the files aren't
visibile in offline mode). I'm really clueless.

If your name was Ferrari then ... I'm sorry, I could not help you :)

For what it's worth, Offline Files do generally work in Vista - I accidently
turned it on, and cached ~89GB of files onto my laptop from the file server
:) My big problem was turning it OFF :))

If I get any good ideas for you, I'll post back here ...
