Install BCM - get warning (Download SP4 BCM) When I try to install SP4 I
immediately get an error and am refered to an MBBSsetuptmpBCAF.log file that
doesn't exists - also when starting outlook answering yes to using BCM with
current profile I get an error that I can't connect to database engine.

Man this is frustrating - any insight would be greatly appreciated....

I have never come across files with a name quite like that working
with BCM. Did you download SP4, and then run it? Who reported the
error with that file, the Setup program or was that error in the
Windows Event log?

Thanks Luther for response.

After Getting the warning that BCM 2003 had issues with Vista, the
installation continues and completes without problems. When I run Outlook
2003 I get the "Do you want to integrate BCM with this outlook Profile, then
the error pops up about no being able to connect to the database engine.

The sp4 patch will not install and doesn,t create a log file.

Also checked the event log no Application or any other evnt notification
shows up for this time period.

I suspect something wrong with SQL, not SQL Familiar, - Server is running "
MSSQL $MICROSOFTBCM STARTED" However "MSSQLServerADHelper not started.

The basic problems with running BCM 2003 lies in the permission
differences. BCM and MSDE (Sql Server 2000) operated under the
assumption that if a user is an administrator, then their processes
will be able to do whatever an administrator is allowed to. On Vista,
a UAC prompt pops up in those situations, and older apps aren't
prepared to handle that.

The BCM issue can be somewhat mitigated by running Outlook as an
administrator, but MSDE is more problematic.

BCM 2007 and BCM 2003 SP4 address those problems by launching actions
that require admin privileges as separate apps (e.g. to open the
firewall when sharing is turned on) and those separate apps are
prepared to handle the UAC prompt. They also change some folder
permissions to allow the sql process to read and write database files.
And most importantly they work with Sql Server 2005 SP2 which is
compatible with Vista (I believe any release of Sql Server 2005 will
work with BCM, but because of some issues that don't affect BCM, Vista
warns users when installing pre-SP2 Sql).

So, you will need either BCM 2007 or 2003 SP4 to run on Vista.

What is the problem with the SP4 patch? Did you download it first and
then try running it? Check for logs concurrent with the Setup failure
in c:|users\<yourlogin>\AppData\Local\Temp.

Hi Luther Thanks again for the response!!

I forgot about that run as admin thing, I will try this for the patch as
well.

SP4 goes in error and refers to a log file in the folder you specified -
however the file does not exist, so I guess it doesn't create it - (probably
a permision thing again.)

The Laptop belongs to a client so I can't try the run as admin right now -
If it works I'll let you know - thanks again....

Similar problem and EXTREMELY frustrating. I'm installing my own MS Office
2003 Pro with OUTLOOK with BCM. I have a new computer, HP a6530f running MS
Vista Home Premium 64 bit. When I try to install BCM, up pops an
"incompatibility" message from Windows that suggests I load SP4 (it has also
popped up with other suggestions, each of which also completely fail).

I run SP4 (and have run all other Updates available) but SP4 for BCM whirs
and whizzes then STOPS, say it can't install, and completely UNINSTALLS
itself.

One other "suggestion" of the incompatibility window is a BCM upgrade file,
but it too loads, whizzes and whirs, then fails, saying the SQL engine won't
install. It too then completely removes itself.

I have spent nearly 3 days fighting this battle. MS says MS Office Pro 2003
is compatible with Vista Home Premium 64 bit, but when installing it, the BCM
fails to install and I cannot get any help to make it work.

Why won't either SP4 or the Upgrade for BCM work? Is there some additional
trick that MS is not sharing with me?

In that situation, when BCM's Setup can't install Sql, the common
procedure is to try to install Sql directly. Once Sql's installed on
the machine, rerun BCM's setup.

You can download the Sql Server 2005 Express installer from
microsoft.com.

I had this problem and was able to work through it. I found there were two
issues to do with the packaging of the BCM add-on to work around in Vista
with 2003.

1. The MDE for SQL is packaged with BCM. This is OK for XP but not Vista.
The SQL MDE is incompatible with Vista. SQL 2005 Express is needed.

So before installing BCM, download and install the SQL 2005 Express S/W.
You may want to select the version with the Advanced Features so you can do
replication (backups). You may also want to download the SSMSE package to
manage the SQL databases you load and create. This is the SQL Server
Management Studio Express S/W.

2. Once SQL 2005 is running, you are ready for the next step. This is a
little slight-0f-hand. You need to defeat the BCM install wizards
programming that has it install the BCM Assemblies and then the SQL MDE. We
know fron step 1 that the SQL MDE is not what we need.

As you have probably noticed, the BCM first step complains and takes you to
the SP4 download, if you follow the link offered. The SP4 install then fails
with a BCM not loaded message. And around and around we go.

The way out of this loop is to make the install wizard fail after loading
BCM but before trying to load SQL MDE. The simplest way isd to rename the
folder that contains the SQL S/W so the wizard fails. I renamed it from
SQL... to SQL...XXX.
Now the wizard installs BCM and fails as we need.

When you bring up Outlook 2007, you should get the SQL install wizard
helping your initialize your BCM databse instance MSSMLBIZ. Next you should
see the Business Tools Menu Added to the Outlook Menu strip just before the
Help Menu.

To be complete I would recommend running your Registry cleaner before using
the system any further. If you don't have one, there are two great freebees.
Ccleaner from Piriform and the Glary Utilities. Just Google them.

I was very frustrated with my need to add BCM to Outlook 2003 in Vista until
I stared at it and the light bulb came on with this procedure. I you follow
it carefully, even though it is unortrhodox, it should work for you.

Good luck. dpminusa.
