Vista malfunction?

Hi all:
I was so happy with my Vista Ultimate pc........2 months without a single
hiccup! This was my 3rd try building a Vista pc. First I tried with Home
Premium and an nVidia PCIE graphics card but that build never worked
right.......lots of video/audio problems. Tried the built-in nVidia drivers
first....malfunctions fairly regularly. Updated to the latest nVidia drivers
from their website, following their exact instructions. Since that wasn't
working well, I figured it would be a while before all the drivers were
perfected and have just put up with an imperfect pc. Then I spotted an ad
for Vista Ultimate retail for about $260 and built another pc with the 64 bit
version of that and an Intel Quadcore cpu and 4 GB's RAM. I decided to try
out the Intel onboard graphics and it all worked just great but I could never
get my MSN dial-up to work right even with their tech support help. So, I
re-installed Vista Ultimate with the 32-bit version and everything works just
great........for 2 months. Today, when I woke up the pc from "sleep", Vista
immediately decided I had a new modem of a different brand and installed new
drivers for the new modem. I don't have a new modem and the one I do have
(US Robotics 56k modem) was working fine. Needless to say the drivers for
the wrong brand of modem didn't work. So, I went to Device Manager and
"un-installed" the modem and re-started.........Vista then found the wrong
modem and installed the same wrong drivers. Geesh! Went to Device Manager
again and "uninstalled" the modem and turned off the pc. Pulled out the pci
modem and re-started; turned off the pc and re-installed the modem in a
different pci slot and re-started. Whoopie! Vista found the "new" US
Robotics modem and installed the correct built-in drivers. Tried to go online
and MSN Dial-up failed to connect........modem not working. I then used
MSN's software to trouble shoot the problem and it says "you have 2 modems".
I selected the US Robotics and the MSN Dial-up now works ok.
This was a relatively minor problem for me since I've worked with pc's
quite a bit, but I am puzzled how the pc could work just fine for 2 months
and with only Windows updates and TV guide downloads could all of a sudden
malfunction like that. I can imagine how upset someone would get who
wouldn't have a clue how to fix the problem. Anyone have an idea what would
cause Vista to all of a sudden just decide it was a new modem? I wasn't even
trying to get online when it happened.....just woke up the pc and it decides
I snuck in a new modem while it was sleeping! Weird!

Windows updates have been known to mess up a few computers with Vista.

Hello "David B. Mathews" :
I always avoid installing any Windows Updates for hardware and download
all drivers from the manufacturer for that reason. I didn't know that
updates to the software would affect hardware drivers. Now I'm scared LOL!
