Vista looks good!

Both Vista Beta 2 x86 and X64 (at different times) installed without a hitch
on my test set up:

Hardware:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
nForce 3 mobo socket 754
WD 80GB SATA-2 HDD (mobo is SATA-1)
Maxtor 30GB ATA-6 HDD - for back-ups
Maxtor 120GB ATA-5 HDD - for documents and multimedia
PNY PC3200 1.5 GB DDR
PNY 128MB FX 5500 AGP 8X graphics
Samsung 16X DVD+-RW, Dual Layer and generic CD-ROM opticals
Other periphs: TI 1394A PCI and Ricoh PCMCIA PCI adapters
500W Power Supply

Software installed - for both versions:

avast! 4.7 AntiVirus Free Edition
Acrobat Reader 7.08
RegCleaner 4.3 (oldie!)
CCleaner 1.30
Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4 + lotsa extensions
Acronis Trueimage 8
WinDVD 7

The MS Office 2007 Beta installed only on the 64bit edition. Installation on
the 32bit edition resulted in an error in the installation of "an assembly
component". The set-up till then automatically rolled back removing all
traces of any installed components! I will retry it later.

The latest Vista beta drivers on the nVidia site worked wonders. The 32bit
version accepted the WinXP drivers for the motherboard devices! The 64bit
version likewise.

The 32bit edition also accepted the drivers for my Verizon Wireless Internet
Broadband Modem and I was able to connect successfully! VZW's access manager
itself was not installed.

In Vista itself a lot of things are buried down and in different places. The
excitement comes from hunting and finding them.

Always addicted to sugared edibles, the eye candy is a very pleasing
corresponding optical experience.

Good good good.

There are quite a handful of trifle bugs here and there - the most prominent
being:

If I open Windows Exploere then sometimes opening folders would make
everything freeze for a few minutes! Opening things up through Computer does
not present the same problem! This seemes to happen at random - I could not
establish any pattern.

Secondly, sometimes log-on takes extra-long. The process seems to stick at
the Press Ctrl+Alt+Del" stage before moving to the "Other User" screen.
(Yes, I made the mods for logging on as Administrator).

Also, any insights into the Explorer and log-in delays would be helpful.

Cheerio.

PS: I backed up the existing WinXP Pro 64 Bit Edition on that test set up
first to an Acronis image first before doing anything!!! I also made images
for both the Vista installations too and will replace them with newer ones
as I go about tweaking and adding components to this machine. I find the
Acronis utility tremendously exciting and make images as often as I can
after any change to my systems.

PPS: Both Betas were downloads. I have only a low speed Wireless BroadBand
Internet connection (Verizon 3G) so I had to request a friend to do them for
me! He did the ISO burns perfectly - I walked him through over the phone.
First time he did ISOs - and both of us were impressed!

Had something similar after installing Office 12 beta on Vista, the
whole thing slowed to a crawl. Another poster (Conor) suggested it was
related to auto defragmentation and proved to be correct. Anyway I
took out Office 12 and put open office in instead and its fine now.

Have you found that OOo opens FASTER than in XP? For me it seems to by
a serious amount.

Yeah OO is pretty quick in Vista, I hadn't noticed it was that quick
but since you mention it.....hmmmm.

Office 2007 Beta 2 installed fine on my x86 Vista box. Runs fine too.
Getting used to the new Office UI is a challenge, for me, anyway.
