Vista "Local only" connection problem

N

I have been running Vista on my laptop with no problems since March
until this morning. Suddenly I was presented with "Unidentified
network" and "Local only". I have tried a myriad of suggestions found
in posts on the net but nothing has helped thus far.

My router is a Netgear DG834G and the laptop running vista has an
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network adapter.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks
Nick

Mine is having the same problem as of this morning to and my tech department
at work advised the in windows XP that there is something called winsock that
needs to be cleared out. But so far everyone that i have talked to does not
know how to clear it out in Vista yet i am searching for a way to do it and
if i find out what to do i will post it or if you find out please post it on
here i would appreciate it. I hope this helps you as a start in your search
for answers.

Thanks for your reply Robert L. I had read those posts before posting
on here. I am trying to recall the exact circumstances of the failure
yesterday morning.

When I first powered on my laptop it booted and connected to the
network without any problems. Now, I am not 100% sure, but I think
Norton AV 2007 installed an update and requested a reboot after which
all networking failed. I cannot even connect with a cable to the
router.

When I check the status of the wireless adapter it just has a 169
address and no gateway, dns, etc.

TIA

Nick

First try this: in Device Manager, disable then re-enable your wireless NIC.
Then try this: in Device Manager, uninstall the wireless NIC and then let it
re-install automatically.

After doing the above: Disable IPv6.

Then, do a search on how to edit your registry to set the DHCP Broadcast
flag to 0 for your wireless adapter.
Finally, in Network Settings disable "connect to a more preferred network."

I have been having a similar problem..but my toshiba satellite with Vista
works with the wireless connections for a local and internet access, but then
if the laptop goes into sleep or hibernate mode if I am not typing on it for
a length of time, then the wireless connection turns into a local only
connection and I have to restart the computer for it to reconnect to local
AND INTERNET (I have tried diagnose & repair, and disconnecting and
reconnecting but that doesn't work). This restarting is such a waste of
time, hopefully you can help me...
thanks
