Vista is SO SLOW

L

Ed,
The Experience Index can be misleading. It is set according to the
lowest subscore not an average of the subscores. I would think that if you
have a score of 4 or higher in all but one subscore then the computer is
running well even though it may say your subscore is 2.4 or whatever.
Therefore, one should consider the overall preformance of the unit when
determining the Experience Index or at least that is what I think.

Sure, Larry.

If you are happy, it is not for me to contradict. A WEI of below say 3.0
however, will have at least one item seriously below par for Vista. It would
be wise to try and upgrade that item. In a laptop, unfortunately, that is
usually quite difficult. It's as I suggested. I don't think manufacturers
should sell any computer running Vista with a WEI under 4.0. Just my
opinion, of course.

Just received a new Dell Dimension E520 with 2G RAM and 256mb Geforce
7300LE. WEI is 3.2. Breakdown -
5.1 Processor
5.5 Memory
3.7 Graphics
3.2 Gaming graphics
5.3 HD

Incidentally, right-clicking Computer doesn't get you WEI, at least
not on this machine...

Right. A seriously weak video card. I have a similar setup on one PC with a
7300 GT. The WEI has to be interpreted relative to your needs. I don't need
high powered graphics, so the PC with a WEI of 4.3 for video with everything
else > 5.4 is just fine for me. For a serious gamer, no.

Got a rating of 5 and it's still awfully slow!

Graphics 5.9
Gaming graphics 5.9
Primary hard disk 5.8

Vista runs slow.

And how come my processor - Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.4Ghz is the lowest
item on the list?

Think this tosses the Experience Index out the window (every pun intended)

Sorry about that. Should have been a bit clearer. Right click "Computer"
select "Properties".

There is also some info on improving perfomance after clicking the "Windows
Experience Index" link then "Learn how to improve your computer's
performance" link

For what it's worth, I run Vista Home Premium:

Processor 5.5
Memory (RAM): 5.5
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: (3D etc): 5.6
Primary Hard Disk (data transfer rate) 5.9

Would you be so kind as to inform a rookie as to what WEI is? I would love
to take advantage of it.

Thanks

Microsoft has sold 100 + million Vista licenses. Lets be generous and say a
few hundred people have posted complaints on this NG. So of course Vista
must suck...

Yep. You could reach the same "conclusion" that Linux must suck by going
to a Linux support newsgroup and counting all the problem/complaint posts
there. If a space alien landed on earth and walked into a doctor's office
he would conclude that "everyone on earth is sick" also.

Or, 99.9% of Vista users don't know anything about this NG and still have
problems with Vista but just ain't telling you. Ever think of that
possibility, which is probably correct?

Cheers.

And if an alien watched the Wintards line up overnight at a BestBuy store
waiting to be the first to purchase the next Microsoft crapware "os" they'd
know the human race was nuts.

Cheers.

vista was not intended for anything running a cpu of less than 2ghz. it can
run of course but will be slow. microsoft is using us as guinnypigs to let
them know whats wrong, very unfair i think. you'll need to get yourself a
decent powerful pc to run it properly, mine runs well. but when i revert back
to xp its still muck quicker, thats why a lot of gamers are sticking with xp.

Vista is slow... there is no two ways about it... I congratulate you If
your one of the lucky ones who has it working nice with everything.

Quite simply, Vista requires better hardware (more RAM, bigger
and faster hard disk, and faster CPU) than XP. That's all it is.

If you want to compare Vista to XP, then you have to get a better
machine. Sorry.
