Vista help needed..yeah I know its xp but

Me

A friend has a Dell c-521 with 1 gig memory yada yada yada

She is having intermittent boot failures and slooooo periods.
I've run the task manager & found the CPU in 100% occupied state
at all time. Starting an app during this takes forever.

Don't know enough about the system to detect a rogue app eating up
processor time.

memory is 1 gig cache is 600+ and free 34

Is 1 gig enough memory for this system?

Second is google's stuff necessary and/or a time hog?

Suggestions as to the possible cause or how to & where to start
looking would be helpfull

Oh by the way..no VISTA groups listed in my mailer...

thanks

What's a mailer?

Why not try the msnews.microsoft.com news server? Then look for
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

Yes, 1 gig should be sufficient. Sounds like there is stuff running in the
background, such as windows search/indexing.
The google stuff is not needed and I would remove it, but actually, it
doesn't really require all that many resources.

O

Ork .

Start >> Run >> type in MSCONFIG >> go to selective start up..
Uncheck everything and then check your anti virus..

Apply
ok
restart..

Your right, this is a newsgroup for the XP OS, not Vista. So post to a
Vista newsgroup. A Google search for Vista newsgroups would gotten you
there lickity split.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/community/default.mspx

You're also using OE, so add the ms news server, news.microsoft.com, and get
to the Vista (and all MS newsgroups) from there under
microsoft.public.vista.*

Here's a link to the vista.general newsgroup that should open in OE.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

Vista specific newsgroups
microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing
microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

since you have used the Task Manager, click on the CPU column at the top and sort the processes by % cpu usage.
then scroll down the list to see what program is using the most. might post that information back.

its too bad that some people think you are not deserved an answer because you are not posting to an AUTHORIZED news group.
