Vista HDD sharing problem in home network

Hey,

I'm in need of help. I can't for the life of me set up my two vista
computers. Here's a little background: I had a older XP that is now upgraded
to vista ultimate, and a new computer with vista home premium. I had
networked both HDD (hard drives) when the computer was XP, so I know its not
my router. Whenever I try to access the drive I always get "permissions may
be denied" and I've tried running through the permissions, everything. And
the computers see one another on the network, and I use a program called
radmin which allows me to take control of the other computer so I know its
working, just the sharing wont happen. why?!

any ideas?

I don’t know what you’ve tried, so here is the whole process:

There are two basic operations, firstly put all the computers in the same
workgroup then, secondly, choose the folders on each machine that are to be
shared. Repeat this on all PCs, use the same workgroup name but, of course, a
different computer name for each of your computers.

1. Add a Vista computer to a workgroup by right-clicking Computer >
Properties > Change Settings then change Computer Name and Workgroup Name.
Make the computer name meaningful to aid recognition.

2. To share a folder, right-click it > Share, type 'Everyone' (not the
quotes), click Add and set the drop down Permission Level alongside Everyone
to either Reader or Co-owner then click Share at the bottom.

3. Make sure in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center you have Network
Discovery, File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing set to ‘On’ and, if you‘re
not using passwords set Password Protected Sharing to ‘Off’, unless you want
to set up identical usernames and passwords on all computers in your network.
If you have it on, you will be asked for a username and password when you try
to access a Vista computer from an XP computer.

4. Windows firewall is normally set to allow file and printer sharing but if
you have a third-party firewall make sure file and printer sharing is enabled
so that each machine can talk to the other(s).

ok, I went and did all this (again)

and again, doesn't work.

May I first add that public folder sharing does nothing more than create a
public folder and allow everyone to it. Which is noto what I'm trying to do.
Althought I did humor you and turn it on anyways. And the "Reader or Co-owner
then click Share at the bottom" screen doesn't come up when you try and share
an HDD, thats for sharing a simple file/folder.


I did find something intreasting though, when I created a share name, I saw
that the folder was only 0 bytes, and the file type is "share" I don't know.

I am pretty good with computers, Just can't figure this out!

To share a complete drive, right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk
Management then right-click the drive graphic > Properties > Security Tab >
Edit > Add then type ‘Everyone’ (not the quotes) and below it select your
preferences, e.g. Read or Full Control. Now Apply, OK, etc. to finish.
