VISTA HAS ME BY THE BUTT!!!

I need to find out what I am missing!

I had a well workin network that consisted of 3 XP computers. One Desktop
was wired via ethernet into its router. A Laptop and another desktop were
connected wirelessly into a Network..

I replaced the hard-wired computer with a new one that has Vista OS. I have
spent hour after hour trying to get the network working, again. I have read
and tried to comply with every posting and artical I could fine ... to no end.

I have the same workgroup name on all three units, have the firewalls "Off",
and have loaded the two XP units with LLTD Protocols. On the "Network and
Sharing Center" page, all but "Public Folder Sharing" and "Passwod
protection" are turned "On."

The two XPs can see each other and the Vista, but the Vista sees only itself
on the "Network" page. The XPs do show on a Network Map, though.

It was bad enough that the P.O.S. Vista "was not compatible" with my
perfectly good HP Photosmart printer, my HP ScanJet Scanner & several
software titles and that my 18 month old Laserjet barely limps along with a
"looks like" driver. I can see why so many folks have stripped off Vista and
gone back to XP!

My son's wife bought a new-to-her Mac, plugged it in and went to work! Just
for giggles, I plugged it in place of my Vista in the Network, and it worked!
All units could see each other and swap music files (at least). Even though
I paid almost $200 more for my new Vista, she wouldn't trade me for her
Two-year old Mac.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance! Mike

Hi Bob:

Both of the XPs can be pinged by IP from the Vista and both are showing on
the Map. They just aren't on the "Network" page. One shows up in the
"unspecified" workgroup, although iy is specified as MS HOME along with the
other units.

I tried to key in the "net view \\xpipaddress" and just got a quarter-second
flash of a black DOS screen with no error. What was it to show?

My Westell 327W is Vista compatible and even though I have "Password
Protected" turned "Off", all three of the network computers have identicle
user names and passwords. They are all turned on with the same logon active!

As I asked befor: What am I missing?

Thanks ... Mike
