Vista First impression : BSOD

R

Robert wilkens

I "upgraded" (I use that word lightly) my Windows Media Centet 2005 Machine
to Windows Vista Home Premium today (and this machine I did a "clean
install" of Vista Business).

Clean Install: good, happy.

"Upgrade": BSOD -- I get a blue screen on every boot after I finish logging
in. I figure something in startup is causing it. I'm going to use safe
mode and play with msconfig turning things off until it boot (I hope it
boots anyway) then see if anything needs to be turned back on. ALSO: No
sound in Vista (HP Media Center m470n.)

I'd blame device drivers. What BSoD screen reads?

Actually, it doesn't read, it blinks blue and reboots.. Then on safe mode it
was sending a report to microsoft about it.

I disabled all "non-microsoft" services (some suspects in my book are the
symantec ones) and all non-microsoft startup items. It's working fine now,
well, sort of, I still have some tweaking to do.

For example, sound didn't work before, but if I went and changed my "default
speakers" it worked. Wish I didn't have to take that extra step, but such
is life.

There should be events in event log about BSoD with all the details. Anyway,
glad you sorted it out.

You suspect right - Symantec drivers will quite spectacularly crash your
Vista!

Apparently, in my case, so do Hauppauge HVR-950 (High-Definition USB TV
tuner) drivers and/or 'hcwclear' (Hauppauge-Computer-Works-clear) ..
Except these insidious driver don't affect me until I reboot -- fortunately,
thus far, Vista has a wonderful ability to use the "Last Known good"
configuration... Still, a headache, the ugprade is, so far.

Robert:
When you performed the update installation there should have been a
popup about conflicting drivers or programs. The dialog box setup is poor
because it only has an OK box, it should say STOP uninstall the conflicting
items. If you uninstall the conflicting drivers or programs the update will
be successful and function properly. Sometimes the drivers will have working
replacements in Vista. Sometimes the program will install properly. An
example is Microsoft Works 8, will list as conflicting, but if the update
for Works 8 is installed there will be no conflict or message. Symantec has
a corporate version that works with Vista, a home edition in beta, but no
other versions work with Vista.

Actually it did say "STOP" and uninstall the major conflicts.. Which were
fiyr programs including Microsoft Ghost, BackupMyPC, and two others that
slip my mind.

It said "everything else on the list may or may not work"
