Vista email not SENDING messages - never had this happen before

As of last night, my Vista email is still receiving messages, but not
sending. Have checked with the hosting company...my settings are fine...have
not changed.

There is an email in my outbox that when I try to delete it, it says
"unknown error"...it will not allow me to delete it.

Am also getting this error message, but not sure if it is related. HELP!!!
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C013E

Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account:

I started having this same exact problem myself last night.
I am not getting that detailed of an error message though - just the unknown
error message.

Undeletable messages, unknown errors, and error messages referring to port 0
are often caused by interference from antivirus programs. What if any
antivirus
programs do you have?

For a temporary fix of the undeletable messages problem, and possibly to the
problem sending messages, download and install this hotfix, with Windows
Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other
folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version of Vista or
a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first. The Vista
SP1
update include this hotfix and more, but takes longer to install.

If it does not also fix the incoming message problem, you may need to
log in through webmail and delete the oldest message you have not been
able to download.

The update took care of my problem. Thank you.
I am running McAfee antivirus software. Are there changes I need to make to
keep this from happening again?

Yes. Most versions of the McAfee antivirus software occasionally cause this
and other problems in Windows Mail, and need to be uninstalled, not just
disabled, to stop them from creating these problems. You then often need
to run this cleanup program to remove what the uninstall leaves behind:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may then need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

You may then want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause
such problems. Most versions of the Norton antivirus program and a
recent version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they also
cause problems in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG,
either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that
scans
email.
