Vista doesn't recognize PDA

I am running an ACER laptop with Window Vista Home Premium. I am trying to
get my Dell Axim X51 to sync with my laptop (I switched from XP). The axim is
running Windows Mobile 5.

Here's what's happening. I plug in my handheld and I hear the system sound
for 'hardware insert' (in other words, vista recognizes that something was
inserted). I open Vista sync center and it does not recognize any new
devices. My computer (just computer in vista) does not show any new devices
to explore either. I installed windows mobile device center (6 or 6.1 ... I
can't remember). When I open that, it also does not recognize the new usb
device. I only see connection settings. When I unplug my Axim, I get the
system sound for 'hardware removed'. I don't quite get why the computer
recognizes that there is piece of hardware inserted but I do not get an error
about it not being able to connect. Does anyone have any ideas? I would very
much like to sync my handheld with my laptop. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Salty

Try removing the hardware via add/remove hardware in control panel (classic)
and then plug it back in - it may properly reinstall...

I tried that and...
Windows does not recognize the device and it is not listed in the list.
Just another note here, I tried turning off the firewall as that has had a
negative affect on the functionality of my PDA and my XP machine. Any other
ideas?

I really hate to post just to get this at the top, but I really need to get
this fixed. My PDA is pretty important and I need it to be able to sync with
my laptop. Anyone have any ideas? By the way, turning the firewall off had no
effect.

I have the same problem. Did anybody find a solution?

Before I start this post, I wish to clear up that WMDC stands for Windows
Mobile Device Center.

I have been working on it for a long time. Still no good. I did get it to
connect once. It said connected, I accessed my pda from my laptop. Then I
unplugged the pda from the laptop. Once plugged in again (no restarts of
either the laptop or the PDA), windows would once again not recognize it.
As I said, I have been trying to fix this since I started the first post on
this one. I tried the following and the computer acts as though it should
work, but for some really odd reason, it does not. Here's what I did
recently...
I plugged in my pda to the laptop so the driver for it would show up in
device manager (in the control panel...classic view). I uninstalled the
driver (not disable, uninstall) and promptly unplugged my pda so vista would
not immediately reinstall the driver once uninstalled. *note: pda not plugged
in now* After that, I opened task manager and shut down the two (or three)
programs that WMDC had running. I promptly went to the programs list (where
you uninstall programs...can't remember vista's name for it) and uninstalled
WMDC. It uninstalled well. Here's the short of system's current status. PDA
is unplugged. PDA driver is uninstalled. WMDC is not running and is also
uninstalled.

Here's what I did next (notice the seperate paragraph). I plugged in my
handheld to the laptop. Vista (naturally) recognizes that hardware was just
inserted (like it has been doing since I first plugged in my pda after
getting the laptop) and promptly begins to install the driver for it (when
viewing device manager, you see the driver being added). Once the driver is
installed, it boots setup.exe for WMDC. WMDC installs correctly and
automatically loads after the install is complete. For a split second I see
that it is connecting (listerally a split second...probably half of one),
then it just stops and once again, does not recognize my pda. What's even
more weird is that when I first plug my pda in, on the task bar a bubble pops
up saying that a Dell Axim X51 has been plugged in and the driver is being
installed. It then no longer recognizes the device. Yet again, when I unplug,
I hear the Hardware removed sound.

I would very much like to have this situation resolved. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
