Vista does not recognize HP 2420d USB Port

T

Telesphore

Just bought a new computer with Windows Vista and Vista does not recognize
the HP LaserJet 2420d USB Port.

I had the same problem last January. then I switched back to Windows XP.

Is there a way to create a USB Port when you want to add a Local Printer in
the Configuration Panel?

Thank you.

Hi, Telesphore.

I'm not sure what you mean. Does your computer not show the USB port in
Device Manager? Or does it show the port, but does not show the printer
connected? To me, the "port" is at the computer end of the cable; the
device (printer, camera, etc.) is on the other end. In Device Manager, the
term "port" usually refers to serial and parallel connectors. My computer's
Device Manager uses "host controller" for the USB connections.

Tell us more about your computer. Does it have USB connectors built in, and
are you plugging your LaserJet into a built-in connector? Or are you using
a USB hub or other not-directly-to-the-computer connection?

My only printer is an HP OfficeJet G55 All-In-One that I bought in 2000 when
Win2K was new. My year-old motherboard has 4 built-in USB connections, and
I simply plugged in the printer's USB cable to one of those. Vista
recognized it immediately and installed the proper driver the first time I
tried to print. (My Control Panel | Printers screen actually shows 4
devices, including Fax, XPS and PDF, for this one printer, but G55 is the
only one that I ever use.)

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

I just bought a new LG R500 laptop with 3 USB connectors: one for a hub and
the other two for an external hard drive.
does it show the port, but does not show the printer
connected?

Well, in Device Manager ("Gestionnaire de périphériques in French") it shows
"HP LaserJet 2420 (DOT4USB)" under "Periphericals IEEE 1284.4
Or are you using a USB hub?

Yes, on the hub, the Keybooard, Mouse, and Printer are connected.

I bought this printer in May 2006 and it is very good!

Do I have to wait until they support it with Vista or buy a new laptop with
Windows XP?

It is very deceitfull not be able to print.

As this is a discontinued printer, unless HP has already made Vista
drivers and software available, I doubt you will be able to resolve the
issue.

If it's not currently listed as supported, it probably won't be. Have you
contacted them to find out?

Why on earth would you buy a new computer with an older o/s just to use a
printer that is not supported? Wouldn't it be better to buy another
printer?

Richard points out that the printer is discontinued. *Certainly* they
aren't going to provide support for a discontinued printer.

Especially these days when excellent printers are so cheap they are
practically giving them away to induce you to buy cartridges for them.

Your at the mercy of HP here. Many hardware manufacturers use the release of
a new OS to force customers to buy new hardware.

Buying a new computer won't help if the manufacturer isn't providing Windows
Vista drivers for the printer. If the printer manufacturer isn't releasing
Vista drivers, then you're pretty much out of luck - complaining to HP might
or might not yield any results, but it's their decision whether or not to
release drivers, not Microsoft's decision.
