Vista defrag ???

E

e

Sony laptop, T7700 with 4GB RAM, 160GB 5400rpm hard
drive, Vista Business, and zero problems

I've never "commanded" a disk defrag on this machine,
but with a little time on my hands this morning I went
to Accessories > System Tools and did so. The blue ring
is spinning with no other visual indication of progress,
and the Word is that it might take hours.

Is that about right? Should I expect a significant
improvement? Should I acquire a more "satisfying" (i.e.
visual) defragmenter?

Thanks

And please, PLEASE stay on topic. Don't try to convince
me that Linux is better than Vista, your religion is
closer to heaven, or Giuliani should be drafted.

From all I've heard, that's all you get. I use the free auslogics disk
defrag because I like to see the progress.

I bet you get a kick out of watching grass grow?

Cheers.

IMHO:

1.So it will take hours. So what? It runs at very low priority and will not
affect anything else you do.

2.Don't expect enough improvement in performance to notice, unless your HD
had been nearly full for months or your workload is really strange.

3.Defragging is not very important on most PCs, laptop or desktop, since HDs
are so much bigger. Hence, I recommend the cheapest defrag app you can buy;
namely, the one the comes for free with the OS.

Sadly Microsoft removed the 'visual' effects of the defragmenter and the
disk defragmenter now defrags in the back ground. You also, currently, don't
have any control over which drive it defragments (it is currently set to
defrag all drives (assuming you have more than one drive or partition). This
changes with Service Pack 1 where you can set which drive(s) disk
defragmenter will defrag.)

I personally prefer PerfectDisk as a replacement for the windows
defragmenter, but this you have to pay for. I have also used Matt's
recommendation Auslogic Disk Defragmenter
(http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download) which, for free,
it a good defragmenter and well worth having if you don't feel like spending
any cash on a defragmentation software.

Thanks for the input. The process took about 90 minutes,
during which I worked normally with no impediment.

Interestingly, my wife thinks that the hair from the
sides of my head has begun filling in my bald spot. Now
that is one helluva defrag tool, and one amazing OS!

"e",

I would recommend Perfect Disk 2008.

John:

May I ask what version and build # of PDisk you are using?

If you have Vista SP1 have you done a full defrag with PDisk?

CZ I'm using PerfectDisk 2008 and yes I have done a complete defrag with
Vista SP1. No problems to report.

CZ, I forgot to mention that the last version of PerfectDisk 8.0 also ran
perfectly on my machine with Vista SP1.

The PerfectDisk 2008 professional build number, incidentally, is 'build 39'

Just downloaded build 44 of PerfectDisk. Have run that and, again, no
problems with Vista SP1

On the Bridge!

The vista design IDIOTS decided that you don't need visual feedback.

The irony is that they call their new os VISTA lol.. *seeing or view Latin
origin*.
I dont know how they managed to hide stuff that is important for the user in
vista,
yet have crap in your face all the time distracting you (like sidebars with
slideshows.. lol)

The vista defrag works in the background and doesn't to a very good job to
really optimize the disk as other defragmenters... Its a degrade of the one
that XP had, since you could make the xp one work on a schedule if you
wanted.. dah.....

You can download 2 free ones here to use along with the vista one, these
have visual feedback

here are the free ones (I like the first one better)

It's the same as the one in XP with a few tweaks... Diskeeper Lite or maybe
ultra lite now with no display (or do you not know since XP, the built in
defrag is Diskeeper). It actually works fine. You do know NTFS has been
tweaked in Vista since XP, yes? Unless one is anal, the difference between
Vista's built in and diskeeper full, perfectdisk, etc is pretty much
negligable to the user.

O

On the Bridge!

you are incorrect.

The built in one on XP was originaly created from another company and
integrated into XP

the one on vista was written from scratch

Its totally Microsoft creation thats why it stinks

LOL

No, sorry cc but it does not stink. You're only saying that because you
no longer have a dialogue to stare at...which was tantamount to watching
paint dry.
The Vista defragger works just fine...and in the background.

You don't need to do any defrag because Vista does it for you in the
background especially if you leave it overnight for updates download as
recommended by MS. Preferable time 3 AM.

Aside, there is a DEFRAG DOS command available. A bunch of crooks are
watching posts like yours to offer their miraculous fixes for allegedly
Vista problems which are no problems at all.

http://www.computerhope.com/software/defrag.htm

Again, Defrag is done AUTOMATICALLY in Vista.
