Vista Default Login screen

I understand that Vista now forces you to use the manky welcome screen - is
there no way to choose your own background on this login screen?

In the current XP domain our PCs are goruped in rooms and suites, each with
their own background showing the PC name and room name for ease of use -
presumably MS now think this is unwise in some way as it has been removed?

I tried setting the background using the HKU\.DEFAULT\control
panel\explorer\wallpaper registry key but still greeted by the unpleasant
green swirl!

As we operate over 500 PCs in a school, I will really enjoy having the
manually change all of the options the kids change on the main login screen
as these don't seem to be controlled by group policy.

One step closer to open source....

Right click the screen > select Personalize > Desktop Background > after
making the selection, just close the program.

Yes, there is...unfortunately, the only method I know about is the
LogonStudio for Vista from Stardock. Unlike the XP version, this one
appears to be part of a package that costs money. I could be wrong about
that, but I don't believe I am. You can check it out at
http://www.stardock.com/

The XP version allowed you to create your own or use a preconfigured screen.
They also had a companion bootscreen changer that was also free. I don't
know if they have a Vista version, but I do know you can change this as
well. I forget the name of the site now, but the program is free.
Unfortunately, it is more involved than the Stardock method was.

Thanks for the info.

I've read that you can use ResHack to edit the login screen image in the
imageres.dll file. I've tried this but there are no IMAGE settings in the
imageres.dll file!

Has anyone else tried this method and got any further (currently Vista
RC1-5600)?

Did you not read the link I gave you? The boot images are in the
winload.exe.mui files, and there are different ones for different languages.

You may be wasting your time with RC1, as I don't think they had even added
the localisations by that time. If the method you are attempting was
possible, you would most probably have to hack the .dll again once SP1 comes
out, or when some Windows Update replaces that file, or when you finally
start using RTM.

Ahh yes, I read your post after my last reply!

I have tried that usefull application - but as you say, it appears RC1 isn't
going to work. Looks like I'll have to get a full copy before I can evaulate
this.

Cheers for all the info.
