Vista---beautiful but deadly?

O

The new OS from Microsoft, it seems, will require massive upgrades in
hardware and massive compromises on privacy and copy-protection issues.
If a discussion
is begun on this, I can refer to specific articles. Note that my only
personal interest in this is that my kid insists this new OS is the way
to go. I don't. Incorporated features, which in some cases will require
specialized graphics and m'board, include VMM virtualization, DRM
copy-protection and TPM "Trusted Computing" chips. Since I've mainly
been a Mac user, soon to go Solaris, I'm not conversant enough with the
MS way of doing things (esp. the intricasies of OS processes/Active-X,
etc.) to assess the whole of Vista. Will invite those knowledgeable on
the subject to give an objective assessment.

I think you and a few other techies are right. Surfing, email, multimedia
and gaming work fairly well on XP so what's the motivation to spend the
equivalent of a PS2 on Vista? If MS said Vista eliminated reboots when
installing apps, and Vista wasn't affected by 99% of viruses, and Vista
was bullet proof against bad applications I might consider. But it sounds
like Vista is just XP SP3.

The same claim was made about XP and it flew anyway.

Not even possible yet.

I was uninterested in XP when it first came out and waited a good 2 years before I decided to go
with it. Vista will have the same consideration. I care little about the activation_
identitfication_ privacy_ licensing _illegal music_ video --DVD bullshit.

Except that XP actually does have many significant improvements over
2k.

From what I hear, Vista is not XP SP3, more like XP with Microsoft
constantly in control of your computer via required spyware. Anyway I
never go with a new OS until it is at bare minimum 1 year old.

I totally agree with you. And this is likely going to cause some
serious problems with certain industries - despite what Bill Gates may
or may not want to accept, there are a substantial amount of computer
environments where the computers CANNOT send ANY information out,
regardless of what it is (eg: license codes, etc.). Bill would like to
see a day when every computer in the world checks in with his in the
morning before coffee. Every computer in the world upon bootup has to
ask his permission to function. Etc. Etc.

It will never happen. There is already an enormous shifting toward
other OSes, namely Linux and Mac. I don't like Mac, and I'm really not
proficient enough with Linux, but I'll be damned if my computer
systems will EVER have to communicate with anything against my
specific instructions. Aside from initial product activation which is
not entirely unfair, I will never use a system that has to allow
spying in order to function.

Just my $0.02

It's already being done to some extent with Windows XP.

Some of the information collected by Microsoft during the OS validation
process includes:

.... Computer manufacturer.
.... Computer model.
.... BIOS manufacturer.
.... BIOS version.
.... BIOS issue Date.
.... SMBIOS version and Date.
.... The Time Zone you live in.
.... The State/Province you live in.
.... Other applications on your computer.
.... What Browser you're using as default.
.... Whether or not you use Proxy settings.

If I did not validate the product, it would still function. So, *why*
would Microsoft require the above information and why *should* they be
permitted to take it without the express permission of the *owner* of
the computer?

So does Vista.
From what I hear, Vista is not XP SP3, more like XP with Microsoft

Mindless pig ignorant conspiracy theory stuff.
Anyway I never go with a new OS until it is at bare minimum 1 year old.

Different matter entirely.

It looks beautiful but I'm not sure what additional benefits it offers over
XP Pro SP2. I will eventually upgrade to Viast but won't bother with it
until MS releases SP2.

You guys are scaring me. I wasn't expecting such energetic responses.
Maybe I'll stick with my ancient Mac..

Vista will not run most software(especially games) that is currently out
there.

What is it with you? I've noticed that whenever someone says anything
remotely negative about Microsoft, *you* jump to a defensive posture.
Are you a Microsoft employee, do you hawk their wares, what?

All I said was:

"It's already being done to some extent with Windows XP".
"SOME EXTENT" being the operative words.

The statement required *no* reply, much less a snotty one.

You replied to the BIOS thing while the more germain information
collected included:

.... The Time Zone you live in.
.... The State/Province you live in.
.... Other applications on your computer.
.... What Browser you're using as default.

Do you consider those insignificant as well? I don't.

J

what are you hiding? my opinion it has nothing to do with MS.

Whats with you? Everytime you have a conspiracy theroy you post it?
Do you use grocery discount cards? Does your license have your correct address? Do you have a SS
number? Do you pay taxes? Send in registration cards for new products? Do you subscribe to any
magazines? Do you have a mortgage? Do you do anything other than sit in a corner and worry about who
knows what time zone your in?
