Vista Basic File restore to different PC

Using the Vista backup/restore application I religiously do file back-ups of
my lap-top to an external hard drive. I had my lap-top nicked and now want
to restore all my working files to a brand new lap-top. I go to the backup
/ restore application and of course it knows nothing of the back-ups I took
from my previous machine. How can I tell the new machine I have backups and
want to restore ?

many thanks
Tommo

Did you use the Advanced Restore option? Click Advanced Restore > click
Continue on UAC dialog > click 'Files from a backup made on a different
computer and then follow the steps.

Andre, I am having this same issue and tried your advice listed below. It
didn't work for me. It still can't find the backup. Any help? Thanks.

Hi Andre,

I have a very similar problem to that of Andre however your advice did not
work for me.

I bought a laptop with Vista Windows Home Premium and had to format.
Therefore I backed up everything using the Backup and Restore Centre to an
external hard disk.

When I came to restore my backup, it could not recognise any backups made.

When I tried your advise using Advanced Restore, it asked me for the
location of the backup file. I selected the external hard disk and asked me
where I want to restore them to. I selected original location and it starts
copying a couple of files but than displays the following error message:
The restore did not complete successfully.
The device is not ready.
(0X80070015)

It does not tell me what device is not ready and I have to cancel the
restore.

Do you know what I should do to restore my files?

Thanks,

Audrey
