I just installed vista doing custom install, it moved all my old windows to
windows.old,
I dont think it changes anything in there correct if not then we whould be
able to revert back!
My logic is to use a live os cd maybe a linux live cd or ERD commander

delete windows folder, copy windows from windows.old folder and
programfiles and document and settings and anyother files that are in
windows.old create a
copy
boot.ini file

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

copy ntldr and ntdetect.com and other system files that are need back to
root of C:

then reboot and hope for the best

What do you think email (e-mail address removed) or Reply

I don't think you can reinstall WinXP from the windows.old files in the way
you suggested.You should have made a back up or image...or dual booted. You
might be able to reinstall Winxp from scratch and then get any data files
from the windows.old files, however, assuming you kept your data in the
default location. However, I'm not 100% sure of what is saved in
windows.old, so I could be wrong. MS warned strongly to make a backup
before installing Vista and that would be your best bet. A good imaging
program (like Image for Windows or Dos) is worth it's weight in gold.
