Vista and Xp Networking Issue

I have 3 PC's on the Network:
2-XP Home
1-Vista H,Pre

Both of the Xp machines can see eachother and modify files/folders. The
Vista machine can see and modify files/folders on both Xp machines. The Xp
machines can see the Vista machine, but I'm not able to modify files/folders
on the Vista machiune, with the exceptopn of the Public Folder. I have all of
the folders in Vista documnets set to share and full permissions. My
firewall is Norton Interent Security 2007 and File Sharing is set to allowed.
However, I still get Access Denied when trying to open folders in Visa
Documnets from an Xp machine.

Does anyone else concurr with this solution? No offense to Koze, but tossing
50.00 down the drain isn't my first choice.

I have seen about 30 or more people with problems related to symantec
software, I'm very sorry, but it is at the moment.
Most of them have no longer problems after uninstalling NIS or similair SW
from Symantec.

It's SAD but the stus quo at the moment. You could contact Symantec support,
maybe they have a better version at the moment .

I have a similiar setup and system. Vista needs usernames and passwords to
do most sharing things on a network. The best solution is to create
duplicate accounts and passwords on all three machines.
For example:
User = GLM71
password = helpme

Create this account on all of the PCs on the network.
In addition you may need to enable the Guest account on the XP boxes.
I don't have Norton, but I have been told that you need to turn off
intrusion detection in addition to allowing file sharing.

In my opinion, Microsoft really blew it with Vista and file and printer
sharing. There should have been a wizard that created a disk to set all of
the permissions/accounts up on each computer. Vista has made file and
printer sharing far to complicated for most home users. The net result is a
horrible first time user experience.

Best of Luck.

Thanks torgrot! I will give this a spin and see what happens. If it turns out
that NIS as a whole is the root problem I will wait for a patch from
Symantec. The Vista Machine is new and at this moment it is not so critical
to share files that I would press the panic button and uninstall my security
as suggested earlier. But I will try your suggestions and see what happens.
Thanks again for your feedback

So I got home and had one more look at those Vista Folders and the Share
settings. I discovered that after right click and select share a box comes up
with a drop down menu and ask you to specify who you want to share with. I
specified who clicked "add" and then gave it Co-owner permission. Restarted
PC and Wa-Laa! I can open/edit all the files I specified. I did this without
uninstalling Norton or even turning it off. If you are having the same
problem as I listed earlier, reply and I will reply with the precise
procedure. I can't do it now cuz my wife has taken my Vista Laptop from me to
play games.....

Thanks to ko and torgrot for helping me out and taking time to reply -- Many
thanks.

I recently purchased a Vista Home Premium based PC. I have an XP based PC
already and I set up a home network using a router. I can get the Vista
machine to map the XP machine on the full network map, but the XP machine
does not recognize the Vista machine, and also I can not manipulate any files
from either PC. I have enabled file, printer, and media sharing for both
computers........I'm really stumped.

First, make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup. Is the XP
box XP Pro?

XP Pro and Windows Vista Home Premium. Both PCs are in the same workgroup,
labeled WORKGROUP. Do I need a switch/hub and a router?

I didn't quite grasp what you were explaining. I have exactly the same
problem, but no NIS to contend with. Your solution sounds like my solution.

Download the patch from the previous post.
Install it on the WinXP box(es).
On both the WinXP computer(s) and the Vista computer make sure they both are
in the same workgroup.
Create the same account UserIDs on all computers with the same passwords.
On the Vista computer add the UserID as a co-owner of the folders you want
to share.
It may take a few minutes to connect, but you should be home free after
that.
If you still can't share you may need to turn off simple file and printer
sharing on the XP boxes and add the accounts to the shares and give them full
privileges.

torgrot.
