Vista and XP home edition - print share

I have a XP home machine with a shared printer. I am trying to get Vista to
see the xp machine. I have renamed both workgroups to match up but vista
still does not see the machine. I have network discovery enabled. I can ping
the xp machine and resolve the name with ping -a . The xp machine is plugged
into the cable router/modem. And vista is on a wireless connection to the
same router.

But if I type \\xp machine is does not find it. \\ip address it does. I had
an issue with "you dont have permission to access this server" so I made a
registry change on the xp machine to allow anonymous connections.

And help would be appreciated.

Run the XP's home Network file and printer sharing Wizard.

Thank you for your post and thanks Mick for the information sharing.

Please run the Network Setup Wizard to configure file sharing for home
networks on XP machine. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start,
click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click
Network Setup Wizard. Please select 'This computer connects to the Internet
through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway'
option for connection method.

With this wizard, we could make sure that the Windows Firewall is
configured with the highest security possible. In a typical home network,
all computers are in the same subnet. Therefore, in such a configuration,
we recommend that you configure file sharing only for local computers.

Please have a try and let me know the result.

Thank you for your reply.

Please try the following steps.

1. Check whether your XP machine is configured to restrict access over
anonymous connections.

To do this, please:

1). Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2). Locate and then double-click the following registry
subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
3). On the right side, double-click restrictanonymous.
4). Make sure that the value in the Value data box is set to 0, and then
click OK.
5). Close Registry Editor.
6). Restart the computer.

2. Please try to turn on Guest account on your XP machine.

3. Please check whether you have installed any Firewall on your XP machine.
If yes, in order to narrow down the issue, I suggest you FIRST disconnect
your network from the internet, then disable ALL firewalls (including
Windows firewall) on your XP machine before further tests.

4. Windows XP Home Edition-based computers always have Simple File Sharing
enabled. For information about how to configure file sharing on Windows XP
Home Edition-based computers, please refer to the following KB article:

I already made that registry change. Made the change and rebooted the
machines. still nothing. I did get those erros below thats what made me
change the annonymous access regedit. What I dont understand is, if both are
sitting on the same subnet with good ip's and both are in the same workgroup.
Then why can I not see the XP machine on Vista. I think solving this will fix
the problem. I have already disabled both firewalls hoping that would make
the change.

Is there a way to remotely connect to a xp home machine. I noticed they do
not have the option under remote tab. Any suggestions?

I found two things

1 I looked at the nsw.log and found:
Network Setup Wizard Log
Attempting to set computer name
Old computer name is the same as new computer name - not setting.
Setting server description (comment): Desktop Attempting to set workgroup
name Workgroup name is the same as the old one - not setting.
Shared Printer: Microsoft XPS Document Writer Shared Printer: hpprinter
Shared Printer: Fax via eFax 3.3

So I am going to change the computer name and workgroup and see what
happends.

I also noticed that the option Use simple file sharing (Recommended) did
not show up on my dialog box. - it wasnt there at all???

Thank you for your reply.

Firstly, I'd like to confirm that you have already turned on Guest account
on your XP machine, is this correct?

I have done further research and I find this issue might occur when Guest
account is in the "Deny access to this computer from the network" list.

We can use ntrights to remove guest from this item.

Here are the steps:

1. Please download Windows Resource Kit Tools from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7
-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displayLang=en

2. Install the above tool on your XP machine.

3. Click Start -> All Programs -> Windows Resource Kit Tools -> Command
Shell

4. Type the following command:
C:\Program Files\ Windows Resource Kits\Tools>ntrights -r
SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u guest [press Enter]
C:\Program Files\ Windows Resource Kits\Tools>ntrights +r
SeNetworkLogonRight -u guest [Press Enter]

Please let me know if the command is executed successfully.

If not, please capture a screenshot for my research.

To capture a screenshot:

1. Please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click "Start", click "Run", type "mspaint", and click "OK".
3. In Paint, click Paste under the Edit Menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the screenshot, choose JPEG as "Save as type",
click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click Save.
4. Please find the screenshot on the Desktop and send it as an attachment
to: (e-mail address removed)

If the above command is executed successfully, please have another test
(using \\Computer IP first) and let me know the result.

By the way, simple file sharing is enabled in Windows XP Home Edition OS by
default and this can't be disabled. This is the reason why 'Use simple file
sharing (Recommended)' option doesn't exist in Folder Options on your XP
machine.

I will try this, but will this have any effect on not being able to see the
xp machine from vista in network workgroups?
