Vista and Memory

I have 2 Gb of physical RAM and over 900 Mb free.

1. Why is Vista swapping to virtual disk?

2. Why is Microsoft STILL using physical HD at ms speed vs. freely
available RAM at ns speed.

3. Why does Vista still swap RAM to HD when I have disabled the swap file?

4. Why does Vista complain about low memory available (because I disabled
the swap file,

YET there is still over 340 Mb of physical RAM free).

340mb free? How large is your HDD?

Hi,
1. Why is Vista swapping to virtual disk?

Because some applications, services, and routines call for an allocation of
pages regardless of the amount of free memory.
2. Why is Microsoft STILL using physical HD at ms speed vs. freely
available RAM at ns speed.

Because some applications expect the pagefile to be there. This is part of
memory management design.
3. Why does Vista still swap RAM to HD when I have disabled the swap
file?

Because you can't fully disable it. A small amount will always be allocated
by the system for kernel mode, something that is not within the span of user
control.
4. Why does Vista complain about low memory available (because I
disabled
the swap file,

Because of the above - you are hamstringing that which programs and the OS
expect to be there.

Thanks.

As I expected. All due to the designed OS and programs.

There is no reason ANY program should require a HD swap file.
They can hang/crash/throw exceptions just as easily relying on RAM.

I had a "WOW" submission that was rejected by MS.
It was a screenshot of the Task Mangler (Performance tab).
"Wow! MS is still using physical disk when free RAM is still available."

They didn't like the submission and told me so in an email response...

160Gb raided to another 160Gb.
I have about 100Gb free.

My monitor size is a 19" flat screen and I have a floppy drive too if
that has any bearing. Probably not.

Windows has always used a swap/page file.. it expects a swap file or page
file to be present.. UNIX also makes use of page files. .it is not just a
Windows thing..

Currently with an active 256 meg Windows XP virtual machine and six other
windows open on 10 desktops, I am using 775 MB of 2.0 GB User Memory and
5.5 MB of my 3.7 GB of my swapfile in PCLINUXOS. 38.2% User Memory and
0.1% Swap. It appears that Linux uses memory more efficiently.

Free RAM = 34mb - 3gb installed.. 30% page file usage..

Bill,

Go do your thing on the Ubuntu Forum, I'll bet you would be welcome there.
You could be so helpful, and believe me they need help:
Ubuntu Main Support Category Forum has 209,631 threads? Do
you suppose Ubuntu has problem or two?
Some thread titles from the Ubuntu Forums:
1. Installation freezing
2. Frostwire crashes on start up
3. Upgrade to Feisty is failing
4. Can I downgrade back ot Dapper
5. Making aptitude stop ignoring sources
6. How do you easily install Ubuntu for dual-boot with Windows

Seems like the same problems and the same folks, and did you notice, they
don't really want to leave Windows behind hence the request to dual-boot.

Go help them.

:

Well I'm sure glad Ubuttoo doesn't configure a separate partition for a
HDD swap file!
Aren't you?

Charles:

Thanks for caring. I am not using Ubuntu, so why would I want to go to
that forum. I am using PCLINUXOS TR3, and I do frequent those forums. I
am also using Windows XP in a Virtual Machine, so I also go to those
forums and even post their occasionally. I work on machines that have
the misfortune of having Vista installed on them, so maybe I should stay
here and post even more. I run my machine day and night for work and
play and gee whiz by golly, it doesn't crash. The Windows XP Virtual
Machine, though, is just like Windows, it sometimes requires a restart,
but at least I don't have to shut down my entire machine. I don't have
anything against Windows XP, except it seems slow after using Linux.
Thanks for your care and concern. You make me feel all warm and fuzzy
inside. Keep up the good work. I finally got enough points to get my
toaster.

I am not using Ubuntu. I have 3 partitions on Drive 0. 40 GB Windows XP
in NTFS, 32 GB Fat32 partition, 80 GB for /. I have an entire 160GB
drive as /home. My third drive is partitioned as 4GB swap and 194GB /
data. I have all my important files saved on both /home and /data in
case of hard drive failure. The entire file structure is visible under /
which is root. I am thinking of converting the XP partition to /wasted
where I will store Saturday Morning cartoons that I download from the
Steve and Frank Show. Burp, burp, giggle, giggle, fart, belch.

Great idea Bill and I'm sure your entire "legacy" (snort) will easily
fit there.

My machine does not feel unfortunate that it has an installation of Vista on
it.. :)

The majority who come in here sounding off about Linux actually use XP as
their main OS, so should be ignored when they use terms like MS fanboys,
because that is exactly what they are by their own standards..

While I do not personally rate Linux as a 'toy' OS, that is essentially what
it is to the Linux trolls.. those who seriously use Linux do not have the
time to come here and insult others..
