Vista Activation Lost After Every Restart

G

Guest

Hi there everyone,

I have a volume license via my employer and have installed Vista x64 on this
my primary system as well as on my x86 system. The x86 system works
perfectly with it and never requires reactivation yet on my x64 system I have
to reactivate Vista after every restart.

Now while this is a little frustrating it hasn't really caused any issues up
until today. Normally the reactivation takes about 10 seconds and I am good
to go but when I attempted to reactivate today I received the following
message:

"The product key you typed is already in use. To activate Windows you
will need another Windows Vista Ultimate product key."

It then goes on to provide me with options to purchase another key or enter
another if I already have one. I can also use the automated phone system to
activate or contact Microsoft, which brings me to a help screen that has here
as one of the options.

I am wondering if the reason why this is requiring a reactivation every time
might have to do with my dual core processor. Other than that, I am unsure
what could be causing it. Either way, I don't want to have to reformat again
as installing Vista this time was much more of a pain in the rear than RC1 or
RC2 were.

Thanks,

Aspenglade.

Hi,

Try this: Choose the option to enter another key, then reenter your volume
license key. Click 'next' (not activate), and it should reactivate for you.
If it does not, you need to have your company contact their source of the
volume license key for resolution.

Your company must abide by the MSDN licensing terms and conditions.
They cannot arbitrarily give every employee MSDN access without purchasing
the correct MSDN subscription coverage.

While I am sure that the company does have the correct coverage being that
they are a major fortune 500 computer company, that is not the point of this
topic. Please either address the issue at hand or move on, thank you :)

Hello Aspenglade,
This is not a volume license product that you are using.
Windows Ultimate is not a available as volume license.
So that is a MSDN key that you are using.
What show in the application event logs for software-licensing-SLC?
That should show us if we are seeing different hardware each boot ( like
the dual-processor issue you reference)
It should give us an indication as why you may be having this issue.

Check the permissions on the WPA.dbl and wpa.bak files in the
\windows\system32 folder

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hi there Darrell,

I've gone into the event logs and it reports two things clearly hundreds, if
not thousands of times, over the time since I have installed Vista. The
first is indeed that it is finding a hardware change on restart and it
reports the following:

Looking in the event details for the actual failure I also show: PA Maximum

Oh, I also forgot to add that my windows\system32 folder does not have either
the WPA.dbl file or the WPA.bak file. I've done a full system search
scanning for all hidden and protected files and neither of these came up at
all. Then again....my 32 version of Vista Ultimate doesn't have them either
and has no issues.

I am having the same problem with my Vista install from my MSDN
subscription. I do not have the two files in question either and have
numerous event log entries for Microsoft-Windows-Security-Licensing-SLC. I
am running a AMD Athlon X2 and have not added ANY hardware since I re-imaged
the computer.

Oooops! Welcome to copy protection, Microsoft Vista 2006 style.

Assuming you have a valid license, call MSFT activation. Your product key
is linked to your hardware in their database and Vista *thinks* it is no
longer on the same computer.

Thanks,

You can assume correctly about the valid license. I have called Microsoft
and they have manually activated twice now. The problem is that it keep
requesting reactivation when I reboot even after manually reactivation.

Robert Blacher said:
Oooops! Welcome to copy protection, Microsoft Vista 2006 style.

Assuming you have a valid license, call MSFT activation. Your product key
is linked to your hardware in their database and Vista *thinks* it is no
longer on the same computer.

Gosh, that sounds like a flaky and flawed anti piracy program. Why am I
not surprised?

I spoke with Microsoft and they have confirmed it is a known bug. The same
thing happens with MS Flight Simulator X as it uses the same activation
system. From what they said, the problem occurs with CPU's that can change
their speed. It views the speed change as a hardware change and thus
requires a re-activation. They currently have no date as to when it will be
fixed.

More proof that the "anti piracy" software schemes only inconvenience
the paying customer and do nothing to stop piracy.

I've not heard of this bug, Jeff. Were it true, some things come to mind:

- Many, many laptops/notebooks change processor speed according to the power
supply in use (plugged in vs. battery). Were this a true bug, I should think
we would be inundated with activation problems of this nature.
- Reactivation is required when the hardware change threshold is exceeded.
To my knowledge and understanding of activation, simply changing the cpu
speed does not change the hardware ID, nor would simply changing the cpu
itself be enough to invoke reactivation. It would have to be in concert with
a number of other changes.

I would seriously question the source of information here. If you were told
this by an MS rep, I'd call back and ask to speak to someone who knows what
they are talking about, or be pointed to an article documenting this (as
there are none that I can find).

Rick,

According to MS it is true. The computer can be running and validated and I
will get the popup telling me to that my hardware has changed. Since I
re-imaged the computer with Vista, there have been no hardware changes made.
According to support a change in CPU speed can trigger the hardware change
flag. They are seeing this a lot (so they say) with machines that are using
overclocking software (mine is not). I thought it was originally a problem
with the license store as the Microsoft online validation website says it is
a genuine and valid copy of Vista, but the computer disagrees, it is as
though when it gets validated it is not storing the validation.

The person I spoke with was the tech support person and two others he
brought in to help. I opened the ticket through MSDN premium support. They
said that the issue is documented on their internal system, but in not in
the knowledgebase available to the public.

Here is the log of the hardware change event. I generated 12 in two minutes
by putting the computer under a varying load by running some Excel recalcs.
After these messages, I get the popup, that my hardware has changed and I
need to re-validate.

Darrell,

I am running a Silicon Image RAID controller on the motherboard (ASUS
A8N-SLI Premium). I am running 3 300 GB drives in a RAID 5 configuration.

These drives were installed and configured prior to installing Vista.

Thanks,

Hello Jeff,
That is the issue, you more than likely need an updated driver from Silicon
Image. There was an issue with the SIL 3114 driver that caused the disk
serial number to be reported as different each boot which could cause your
issue. An updated driver should be available to address this issue.
Do you have a case number where it was told to you that the processor was
the problem?
The processor should not cause this type of problem to happen and there
have been no reports of this happening. I would like to track down where
that information is coming from
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
