Vista 32

ok,

I'm about to toss out my
32 bit pentium and upgrade
to dual or quad core.

I'm not interested with
buy a 64 bit vista this
late in the game.

so I was wondering if any
one had some suggestions
for me.

I know that installing a
32 bit program on a
64 bit cpu is basically
wasting 32 bits of cpu
power.

but if dual cores and
quad cores use hyper
threading,

then would vista 32 work
twice or 4 times as fast
because the 32 bit o.s.
will be hyperthreaded?

MS has info here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Wi...54-d5ef-4f2c-8fb9-149bdc5c8a701033.mspx#EBBAC

64-bit OS would have a performance increase if you have a large amount of
RAM (4GB+) because it manages it more effectively.
64-bit OS can be more responsive if you frequently switch between apps, even
if they're 32-bit apps.

Then there's the dual/quad core issue:
If you run a program, it gets a core. It will most likely run faster on a
3GHz single core than on a 2.5GHz dual core.
If you start a second program with one core in use, it will start using the
second core, and will be noticeably faster on the 2.5GHz dual core.
The more things you try to do at once, the more benefit you'll notice from
dual/quad cores.
If you try to copy a large number of files, your CPU will spike to 100% and
it will be near impossible to do anything else until it's finished. If you
have multiple cores, you should be able to do other things.
more cores + multitasking = better
If you only run one program at a time, save your money. If they still sell
single core machines, they're much cheaper.

It depends to some extent as to whether the app has been written / coded for
iether mult cores or 64bit, and whether you refer to user seen speed or tech
test speeds.
Personnaly, using Office 2003 & 2007 and other offfice type apps, other than
an app opening quicker I've seen no noticible speed increase goning from a
slow single core with 1gb memory, to a dual core with 2gb matched memory

Of course a rest lab would show a speed increase but would a user?
( a 64 Vista 'might' qualify for a win7 64 upgrade at much reduced cost, for
a period)

ok, well that makes
sense.

between vista running
multitudes of it's own
and unknown processes

and we humans wanting
to run the email, browser
and office, to say the least

I really don't think that
anyone uses one program
at a time.

I mean, a person has
the capacity to see one
screen at a time,

but it shouldn't mean
that only one program
should be running at
a time.

so this is the gist of
my curiosity.

yeah, will I got the
32 bit vista ultimate
because I have a
32 bit pentium.

being a pentium,
I thought it would be
adequate.

it can handle the
stress of running
multitudes of processes.

but even with a couple
of gigs of ram, hundreds
of gigs of free space,

it runs like a little old
lady with sneakers.

I think I found the
problem.

it seems something
wasn't right with the
power options.

for whatever reason
selecting a different
power profile did
something that made
vista zippy again
on the p4.

I guess I'll wait on
the quad core.
