a friend is looking for either a visio clone or a ms project clone or both.

If you really mean clones, then I think you are out of luck. They both
have proprietary file formats, and I don't know of any freeware that
reads and writes those files.

For similar functionality:

visio - try dia. Home page at http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/. The
download for windows platforms is at
http://dia-installer.sourceforge.net/.

project - try ganttproject, at http://ganttproject.sourceforge.net/.

A quick search of ACF on google groups should have turned both of
these up.

Just ran into this and am doing some testing of it. Preliminary looks
good. Note you need the Java2 runtimes.

For Visio there is Dia http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/

And there is another one which was quite good, which is currently
defying my supposedly bullitproof freeware indexing system and it's
driving me crazy!

Visual Thought! That was it - http://tersesystems.com/code/?overview=vt14
