Virus/Trojan Screwed up IE 6

Tavis

Hello all.

I recently had to work on my cousins computer system that
is running Windows 98SE and IE 6.0. The system was
infected with a few virus/worm/trojan. It originally found
13 infected files. I beleive the names that AVG AntiVirus
Free Edition were:
Psw.briss.a
and
Revop.c

Well I finally got all of the infected files removed,
however one of them was the Windows Media Player
executable so I will need to reinstall that. Hopefully
that won't be a problem. The main problem however is that
Internet Explorer 6 will not operate properly. When I open
IE, it will try to load the page but it will lock up
before displaying any graphics. I have to End Task IE to
close it. HOWEVER, I can go into an Windows Explorer
window, type in a web site address and it will bring up
any web page just fine.

I have tried reinstalling IE 6 SP1 but to no avail. My
cousin does not want to have to reformat but I am sure I
can talk them into it if need be, but that will be my last
resort.

Can you guys suggest anything?

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
